I don’t know about you, dear fellow blogger, but I freak out a little bit when I hear that my real-life friends or acquaintances have been reading my blog.
Which is stupid.
Blogging is a very public thing unless of course, you have a private blog. Everything I write and share and talk about is out there for the world to read, to share further, to disagree with, to dislike, to spam, to never return to.
But I’m so fine with that. Why am I fine with that? I have no idea. Perhaps it’s because there’s no personal connection to the 99.9% of the people who read it. Perhaps it’s because I’ve never met them, and most likely will never meet them. Perhaps it’s because the internet seems like this big vast thing where you’re more likely to get lost than to actually thrive.
Perhaps.
But when my friends read my blog? Suddenly I feel like I have to go back into my blog and make sure everything is okay, and that haven’t said anything that would offend them or make them think any differently of me. Maybe I’ve shared something that will make them think I’m crazy, or I’m still a child, or I waste all my money on books.
But then every so often I have to stop. I have to remind myself that actually, my friends wouldn’t be my friends if they didn’t know who I was. They wouldn’t be my friends if they didn’t like me for who I am. They know that I’m a little mad, they know I love spending my money on books and that I will never pass up an opportunity to watch a Disney film. They know that I have too many hobbies and too many things that I love to keep to one genre or style. They know all of this. This is why they’re my friends.
I don’t know if you’re like me or not. Perhaps you only share your blog with your friends and family. Or maybe no one you know actually knows you have a blog, to begin with. Maybe everything is public and some friends know but some don’t. What your situation is, I hope that you don’t freak out at times as I do, but that if you do, I hope you know that that’s okay, too.
I’ve come to realise that that’s actually completely fine. It’s okay. You’re okay. In fact, you’re doing well. You are rocking it. And your real-life friends should always be supportive of what you’re doing (unless you know…it’s illegal or endangering the lives of yourself and/or others).
Don’t be afraid to tell people about what you get up to. Sure they may roll their eyes at your To Be Read pile perching precariously on your floor (because let’s face it, your bookshelf is well overflowing and there’s no room on your bedside table), or they may not get your love of crochet, or apple-based desserts, or your collection of vintage buttons, or your obsession with Pop Funko figures. But they do get you.
And that … is more important.
