My Growth Coach is a wonderful new personal development subscription box

Based out of Auckland, New Zealand, My Growth Coach is a new personal development subscription box. It’s full of fun goodies to help you learn and grow and put into practice the things you’ve learnt in the featured book.

The creator and founder, Deepna, has done an incredible job at putting together a subscription box for New Zealand customers, and I thoroughly enjoyed unboxing my very first box live on Instagram.

Rather than tell you all about the box myself, I have Deepna here to chat about My Growth Coach, how it came about, and how she finds inspiration for each box.

Interview with Deepna from My Growth Coach

Hey Deepna! Thank you so much for chatting with me today! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I’m a kiwi-born Indian raised in Auckland, NZ. I have 3 older brothers and sort of grew up as a tomboy. My background is in Clinical Exercise Physiology, so health and wellness have always been a great passion of mine, and I still practice as a part-time Health Coach. I also enjoy being in nature, gyming, lots of me-time, cooking, spending time with family, and I love to make people laugh because after all, laughter is the best medicine.Ā Ā Ā

Ha! So true! I love how you have heaps of hobbies! So do I! What drew you to personal development?Ā

I’ve often been described as curious, and now when I think back to how my personal development journey started I remember when I was young, I’d often question the existence of life – I just thought I was a big weirdo and didn’t realise that I was just curious to learn deeper truths of what it means to live a more fulfilling life.

I really enjoy thought-provoking conversations, which naturally drew me to a lot of self-help/personal development podcasts, interviews, and more recently, books. Whenever life got challenging or I’d feel alone, I’d often turn to these outlets for guidance (or productive distraction lol). I realised that the more I listened, the more my mindset expanded to understand different perspectives and I’d always feel a surge of inspiration hearing about other people’s success.Ā Ā

They say to surround yourself with people you aspire to be like, this was my way of doing that.

That is amazing! It’s so neat how you’ve taken something that you love – learning and developing and growing – and turned it into this amazing subscription box! Can you tell us a little bit more about how My Growth Coach came about?

Absolutely! The past year has been full of changes from starting a new relationship to leaving my stable corporate job to moving cities again and coming back to my family home. I’ve always wanted to work for myself so I decided to take some time to really figure out how to do that instead of just jumping into another full-time job.

As I was exploring I started reading personal development books again and I invested in different courses and coaches. It really allowed me to start feeling the value of investing in myself and how it helped me show up as the best version of myself. I knew then, that this was something that everyone should experience regularly – it should be normal to prioritise your own personal growth and work on your own goals.Ā

Then I put out a survey to discover the barriers people were facing when it came to their personal development. There were over 120 responses and I was blown away! I came to learn that while everyone wanted to engage in personal development they either couldn’t find the time, didn’t know where to start, felt unmotivated, or didn’t want to do it alone. I used this information to develop a service offering that would help make personal development more accessible – and that was the birth of My Growth Coach.Ā Ā Ā

120 responses! What great feedback for you! I received one of the first boxes you sent, and I loved it. Can you tell us a little bit about what will usually be in the boxes in the future?Ā

Each box will have a personal development book, and an accompanying workbook to help members absorb all the lessons from the author. We also include 2-3 surprise items relating to productivity, self-care, health and wellness, etc.Ā

It was such a lovely surprise to find a workbook in the box and the habit tracker! You really went that little bit further to make it a really practical box as well as one that’s full of goodies!Ā

What’s special about the products that we feature in our box is that we collaborate with local businesses that align with our values. This way we get to support other people’s dreams and our members get the satisfaction of shopping locally. And as an added bonus, most businesses like to throw in cheeky discounts for our members to enjoy.

I absolutely love that! And supporting local businesses is so important. As well as the extra goodies, the box actually includes access to some other things too! Tell us about the masterclasses and group coaching!

Yes! On top of the monthly box, we also include some online features to further support our members’ growth journey. Our masterclasses provide an interactive learning experience and are hosted by experts in the particular theme of the month.Ā

Our group coaching sessions are all about connecting with like-minded individuals and having that community support. It’s an opportunity for us all to share our thoughts, discuss challenges, find solutions, and help each other stay accountable and motivated towards achieving our goals.Ā Ā

We also have an exclusive member community, which is a private FB group that offers 24/7 support and allows members to connect with each other in their own time.Ā Ā

One of the things I really like about this box is exactly that: that there’s an online community around the boxes too. Not many subscription boxes do that (that I’m aware of anyway!).Ā

How do you go about choosing which items to include in the box?

First, I figure out what people want to learn more about. For this, I go back to the original survey and I also ask questions via our Instagram/FB Stories. Generally, there is a theme for each box so I researched what tools and resources would be helpful when learning about that theme. For example, our October box is themed ā€˜Master Your Habits’ and it includes a Habit Tracker and Magnetic Notes.

As mentioned before, we do our best to support other local businesses, so whenever I come across a business that I think aligns with ours I take note, and I reach out to them closer to the time of when we’d like to include their product in one of our boxes.Ā

And how do you go about choosing the book to include? I would find it tricky to narrow it down!Ā

Similar to how I pick out the products, I make a list of books that align with the theme, or I come across the book first and make that the theme, which is definitely what I did with October Box. I read Atomic Habits by James Clear, which is such a good book I just had to include it.Ā

Research and book reviews also keep me up to date with what personal development books are trending, and I try to pick books that cater to all reading levels and are relevant to our current climate. I want to make the reading process as easy and as fun as possible because reading is definitely a skill that requires practice and not all of our members are readers, to begin with.Ā

You also include a workbook to accompany the book, which I think is SO cool! What’s your process for putting that together?

Aw thank you! Yes, our members love the accompanying workbook as it offers an interactive learning experience to help absorb all the knowledge and wisdom passed on from the authors and apply it to their own life context. There’s a quote that I love, which is ā€œknowledge is not power, applied knowledge is powerā€.Ā

In terms of how I put it together, I first set out to read the book with the notes app on my phone open. As I’m reading I record down any quotes or phrases that really stand out, then at the end of each chapter I pick out 1-2 key lessons that the author writes about and I ask myself ā€œhow can I apply this concept to my own life?ā€ As I answer this question for myself, I come up with little exercises to complete that help me think about my own experiences and personal situation. Once I’ve finished reading the book, I take all my notes and I turn it into an interactive workbook!Ā Ā

I love love love this! Like I said before, I think it’s a really great way to make the reading experience more practical. So often I’ll read a book (especially non-fiction) and underline things and then never come back to them. I feel like this workbook allows you to sit with the content and the ideas more and embed them in your brain haha.

So how can people sign up?Ā

At the moment we are only shipping nationally in New Zealand. Our current membership option is a month-to-month plan for $99.99 per month. And if we have any leftover boxes from the previous months then they will be available as a one-off purchase (no subscription) through the shop section on our website.Ā

Amazing! Thank you so much for joining me! Anything else you’d like to add?

Just a massive thank you for this opportunity. I love your work at This Splendid Shambles and it’s so encouraging to be around other kiwi-doers and goal-getters. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world!Ā Ā To the readers – thank you for your time and remember it’s okay to put yourself first and prioritise your personal growth!Ā

Thanks, Deepna!
