Romantasy is on the rise. The fantasy come romance genre is making waves around the world and it’s not just on #bookstagram. Readers are discovering a lot more romantasy books being released, and are grabbing them up like hotcakes. I’m reading my fair share of them, too, however, I’m always on the lookout for romantasy book recommendations. So that’s what we’re going to do today.
Some of these recommendations are ones that I have read, some are ones that are on my TBR and some are ones that have been raved about online a lot in the past year. Let’s get into it!
What is Romantasy?
Looking for a romantasy definition? It’s a fantasy book, whether that be high fantasy or low fantasy, combined with, or with an emphasis on, the romantic side of the story – romantic fantasy. They’re books that are swoon-worthy but often have magic, or dragons, or elves etc.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
Unless you’ve been living under a rock since 2012, you’ll likely know who Sarah J Maas is. Her book series was Throne of Glass, and since then she’s gone to write a HEAP more books. And while they all have romance interwoven into their fantasy settings, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a brilliant example of romantasy. It’s plot-driven in a fantasy world, but the romance and the relationships are a key part of that. If you haven’t already read this book, then I highly recommend picking it up.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, New Adult
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
There have been mixed reviews of From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout. I really enjoyed it but some of the people I know really didn’t like it. But it’s a story of Poppy and Hawke, and this crazy fantasy land of vampire-like creatures. It’s a slow-burn romance that didn’t feel too forced, and while it was a bit slow in the beginning, it definitely picked up.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, New Adult
The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
“Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always – always – guard your heart.” The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent is the story of Oraya, the adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king. Yup! In case you thought vampires had died out in fiction, think again. In this story, Oraya takes part in a tournament to give herself some safety in a world that is designed to hunt her. I haven’t read this one yet, but it’s on the TBR.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Adult

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
The hype is real. I read this book in July 2023, and I absolutely loved it. Sometimes hyped books can be overhyped and they don’t live up to your expectations at all. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros did though. It’s dragon-riding, it’s dragon school, it’s enemies-to-lovers, it’s dragons … oh did I mention that? It’s definitely a top read from me for the year and a great romantasy book.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, New Adult
Red Winter by Annette Marie
While I’ve not yet read Red Winter by Annette Marie, I’ve heard and read good things about it. It’s Japanese mythology, which I would LOVE to read more about, even in fictional, romantasy form. Emi, pursued by earth spirits, unexpectedly saves the life of one of her hunters, Shiro, who isn’t what she thought. To uncover the truth about her fate and the gods’ treachery, she must trust Shiro and venture into the spirit realm, putting her life on the line. This one is an older title and has been out since 2016.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
I’m almost embarrassed at how long Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson, has been on my TBR list. Probably since it came out in 2019. Elisabeth, raised in a library amidst magical grimoires, dreams of becoming a warden to safeguard her kingdom from sorcery. However, when a dangerous grimoire is unleashed, she teams up with a sorcerer, Nathaniel, to unravel a conspiracy and discovers her own hidden power. It honestly sounds so great. Books, fantasy, magic, and romance? Sign me up.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult

A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden
Another that has been on my TBR for a little while now, A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden is the story of Arwen Valondale. She’s taken captive by the sinister Onyx King, and is compelled to use her rare magic to heal his soldiers. With no choice but to collaborate with a fellow prisoner and face treacherous royals, dark forces, and her own power, Arwen wants to escape the Onyx Kingdom and find her way out.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, New Adult
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
A witch-hunter and a witch – what could go wrong? Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin is a fast-paced romantasy series (this is book 1), and while I didn’t love the second and third books, I really enjoyed this first one. In fact, I added it to my list of Top 100 Favourite Books of the Decade a few years back. It had everything a good fantasy book should have; superb characters, mysteries, magic, brilliantly written minor characters, and a whole lot of sass. And that romance you’re looking for.
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas
While I love SJM, I haven’t actually (at the time of writing this post), read House of Earth and Blood yet. But it’s on the list and I cannot wait to finally dive into it. After her friends are brutally murdered by a demon, Bryce Quinlan becomes determined to seek vengeance, getting entangled in the investigation. Hunt Athalar, a Fallen angel enslaved by Archangels, is offered his freedom in exchange for helping Bryce hunt the murderer. I’ve heard on amazing things about this romantasy book and I really need to pick it up!
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, New Adult
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco
I love the books that Kerri Maniscalco writes, and Kingdom of the Wicked is no different. Emilia and her twin sister Vittoria, both witches living secretly among humans, are torn apart when Vittoria is brutally murdered. Driven by vengeance, Emilia delves into forbidden dark magic and joins forces with Wrath, a prince of Hell, to uncover the truth behind a series of murders and secrets, navigating a treacherous path of intrigue and forbidden romance. Honestly loved this romantasy book.
