If I had to choose between cats and dogs, then I would choose dogs. Don’t get me wrong – I love cats, I do, but I love dogs just that little bit more. However! I really truly miss having a cat about the house. We’ve always had a cat, even when I was just born we had a big fat ginger kitty. The only time we haven’t had a cat was when we were in Mongolia for three years, but even then I remember a cat sneaking into the house one day. And now that we are in England, we don’t have a cat either! We’ve always had a dog too, and have one now, but it is weird not having a cat.

This post isn’t really about me not having a cat; this post is about the saying ‘Stop and smell the roses’. Confused? I’ll go on…

To get to work each day, I have to catch the bus. But to get to the bus stop, I have to walk to the main street. It’s not long – only about 7 minutes – but I often get distracted. I have to walk past the local library, and they have a couple of cats that hang about. ‘The Library Cat Gang’, as I like to call them. I don’t think they are actually allowed in the library, but they hang out in the foyer and outside. A lot of the time, there’s one of them basking in whatever bit of sun or light is out in the morning, and they go all cute and rolly and ‘pet me pet me’.

Because of this, I often miss the bus that I could have caught, and have to wait another few minutes for another one. But it’s worth it. It’s worth being a few minutes late. It’s my version of ‘stop and smell the roses’. It’s my version of pausing and having a nice moment with a cuddly creature. It’s my version of ‘don’t rush around’ and ‘take a breath and enjoy the world around you’. I think normally I do this quite well, but it is nice to just stop and pet a cat once in a while…or once a day…

So today, this week, this month…stop and smell the roses.
Stop and pet a cat. Stop and take a breath.
Stop and be.
