This month was a mix of tiny books under 200 pages and the largest book I have ever read in my life. Both Stargirl and The Last Question were short stories under 200 pages which I read for our Blogger’s Bookshelf book club theme for February: Under 200 pages. The Wicked King was the sequel to Black’s The Cruel Prince, and while I didn’t love it as much as the first book, it was still really enjoyable (than you to Allen and Unwin NZ for the review copy). The Binding was a really interesting read, and if you like books about books, then I suggest you pick this one up (thank you to Harper Collins NZ for the review copy).

The largest book ever in the history of Anjali-Reads is Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare. You guys, it’s 880 pages!! When I updated my progress on Goodreads at 316 pages in, it told me that was only 35% of the way through! What! Why?! So I started reading this book and it’s a week later and I feel like I’ve barely made a dent in it. Taking bets on just how long it’ll take me.

Movies

Oh how I wish I could share with you guys a great movie I watched this month, but once again 4 weeks has come and gone without me so much as even thinking about going to see a movie. I didn’t even catch any Netflix movies this month, despite quite a few being on my List to watch. More and more I’m moving away from movies in favour of TV shows. It’s just what it is. Here’s hoping the next month is different.

Shows

This month I’ve been trying to catch up a little on Merlin (I’m only up to season 4, despite the fact that I watched season 1 – 3 about 3 years ago), as well as watching Modern Family (up to season 8). The new release shows I’ve been keeping up with each week are Roswell: New Mexico and The Passage, both of which can be found On Demand if you’re in New Zealand.

Can I just say, I was very apprehensive about a remake of Roswell. I discovered the show late (I think it was around 2010 that I binge watched the entire show) but loved it a lot. When it was announced they were remaking it, I, like many others I assume, just thought “Why!? Why remake something that was so great? Just leave it be! Surely you have other, new ideas you can work with to create something new. You’re just being slack and un-creative.” But you know what…? I’m actually enjoying the remake. GASP. I know, I know. I think what it is is that it’s similar enough that it’s definitely Roswell – same characters, same premise about three aliens trying to blend into the community, very similar starting-off plot – but it’s different in many other ways. All the characters, for example, that were teenagers in the original are in their 20s, with adult jobs and storylines that have been filled in since high school. While the beginning episode of Roswell: New Mexico was very very similar, the plot on the whole took a very different turn, and I’m actually enjoying it.

The Passage, which is based on the book series by Justin Cronin, also came out in the past few weeks, and I’ve been watching that too. While the show is a little different to the books and the ‘woah’ kind of moment that we got throughout the books was revealed at the beginning of the first episode, I do get why they had to spin it that way; it’s show-biz after all. You’ve got to spin these tales a little differently for television. But other than that, I’m enjoying their take on Cronin’s brilliant books, and looking forward to the rest of the series.
