So you’ve written what you think is an incredible blog post, and you’ve hit ‘publish’ but even after a couple of months … it’s really not going anywhere at all. You’re not getting any traffic to it and you’re not sure why. Hey, I get it. Happens to the best of us. Let’s chat about what to do when a blog post flops (cause it does happen!).

When a blog post of mine isn’t performing the way I think it should be performing, then there are some questions that I like to ask myself. I head back to that blog post with this list of questions and ensure that I can tweak a few things here there.

So what do we do when this happens? There are a few questions we can ask if a blog post isn’t performing in the way we want.

What to do When a Blog Post Flops – 8 questions to ask yourself

  1. Is the headline worth clicking into?
  2. Is the post relevant to my blog?
  3. Have I used good keywords?
  4. Are my headings clear and concise?
  5. Do my images complement the post?
  6. Have I shared the post on my social media and Pinterest in a way that’s captivating and intriguing?
  7. What can my audience take away from this post?
  8. Am I bringing a new perspective to the topic?

Is the headline worth clicking into?

Double-check your headline or the SEO title of your blog posts. Perhaps it’s not capturing people’s attention or their imagination. SEe if you can tweak it to make it more engaging.

Is the post relevant to my blog?

This is a tough one if the answer is no! Always make sure that your blog posts are in the realm of your blog’s niche. If your blog covers a few topics (like mine!), make sure that your blog post aligns with at least one. You don’t want something super out there and random.

Have I used good keywords?

Hopefully, you did your keyword research when you first wrote it (if you didn’t, do that!), but have another check and see if that keyword/s is still the best one/s for your blog post. It might be that you need to adjust the keywords for the post. If you end up doing this, make sure that you go through and tweak your body, headings and title.

Are my headings clear and concise?

It take help your headings are clear and concise. Which can be tricky if you love your words! But it’s a good idea to keep your headings nice and succinct.

Do my images complement the post?

Images are important for your blog posts. Have a couple through your blog post and make sure they’re relevant to what you’re writing about. I like to have 1 x image per 300-500 words or so.

Have I shared the post on my social media?

And Pinterest! If you’re a Pinterest user then make sure you’ve created several Pins and shared them. Likewise, if you have social media for your blog post, then be sure to share it there in a way that’s engaging for your audience. Encourage them to click through to your blog posts.

What can my audience take away from this post?

Read through your blog post again, and make sure that there is something that your audience can take away from your blog posts. If there’s nothing, find something you can add it. If it’s a personal post, it might be as simple as adding in a lesson that you learnt; your readers will be encouraged by your experiences.

Am I bringing a new perspective to the topic?

It’s easy to write about the same ‘stuff’ as everyone else online. But you are you. So if you have a new perspective on something, then share it! If you don’t, that’s not a problem at all. But it’s another thing to look at when you’re wondering what to do when your blog posts flop.

Those are just some of the questions you can start to ask yourself when your blog post isn’t doing how you’d like. If you find your answers to be a little questionable, head on back to your blog post and see what you can tweak.
