Perhaps you’ve thought about it for a long time now, or maybe it’s a relatively new concept to you. Maybe you’ve only followed other people’s blogs for years or you only stumble upon them when you’re scouring Pinterest for that perfect idea. Whatever your situation, you’re reading this blog post because you’re intrigued: are you ready to start a blog? Is now the time? Is now the right time?

I’m going to tell you straight off the bat that yes, now is the time. And yes, now is certainly the right time.

But I know I know you’ll still question it. So here are seven signs you’re ready to start a blog.

Signs you’re ready to start a blog

  1. You always thought about starting a blog
  2. You have doubts about starting a blog (completely normal!)
  3. Your personal Facebook posts are about 500 words long
  4. You’re constantly sharing tips on other people’s Instagram and social media
  5. You get excited by ideas such as email opt-ins and subscribers
  6. You want to share your story or experiences
  7. You stalk so many other blogs and get that ‘I could do that’ feeling

Any of those resonating with you already? I hear you! When I started blogging, I didn’t really know any other bloggers anywhere, and I struggled to find inspirational bloggers to follow. But that was back in 2009, and there weren’t as many blogs on the internet.

But so many people start blogs these day,s and while you may think ‘well if there are already blogs out there, there’s no point starting one’.

Here’s the thing though: no blog is your blog. You have a unique story, your own experiences and expertise. There’s room for you and your story.

So with that in mind, let’s unpack those seven points above in more detail.

You always thought about starting a blog

Perhaps you were introduced to the world of blogging years ago. Maybe there’s always been a niggling thought in the back of your mind about starting a blog. If starting a blog is something you’ve always thought about, then now is the time. There are so many blogging resources out there (free and paid), and the world is full of incredible tools and courses that can help you on your journey.

You have doubts about starting a blog

If you’ve ever thought ‘who would read it?’, or ‘it looks really complicated’ or even the classic ‘I don’t have time’ then push all those thoughts out of your head. People will read it if you’re writing for them. It’s easier than you think.

And let me tell you something: you will make time for the things you love. Setting aside time to create just one post a week and stick to it for 6-months and then re-assess where you’re at.

Your personal Facebook posts are about 500 words long

So you have things to say, I get that! But maybe your personal Facebook account isn’t the best place for that. Do your family and friends really want to hear at length about your crafting project? Your coding expertise? Your love for architecture? Okay, yes they might, but do you know who would also love to hear about those things? The World.

If you can write 500 + words on your Facebook account about the health benefits of kale, or the incredible organic qualities of certain sheep wool, or about how to build a robot from scratch … then you can start a blog.

You’re constantly sharing tips on other people’s Instagram and social media

Leaving a good comment on Instagram is key to engagement. If you’re not doing that already, you need to get on that bandwagon if you want to see growth. But I digress. If you’re Queen of leaving incredible comments and you get really into what other people are posting about and sharing, then perhaps it’s time for you to start doing the same.

When you have a blog, you can get all the additional fun stuff that goes with it, including platforms like Instagram. If you’ve got things to say, why not start your own blog and Insta to go with it? Repurpose that blog post into IG posts and you’re home and hosed

You get excited by ideas such as email opt-ins and subscribers

If the idea of creating freebies for people to sign up for so you can send them sweet sweet emails about all the cool things you’re getting up to, then maybe it really is time to start a blog.

One important thing to remember about social media, despite its incredible ability to connect people, to teach, to encourage, to entertain … if Mark Zuckerberg decides to pull the plug one day then all those followers you’ve worked so hard to build a community with will go poof! Disappear. But your email list is forever. (Until the internet ceases to be.) If writing emails and sharing resources and building community via email sounds like your kind of jam, then that’s one part of blogging that is super fun and beneficial.

You want to share your story or experiences

Your story is important. Your story is worth sharing. Imagine how many people you could inspire, educate, and entertain with your story? Perhaps you’ve had some experiences in the past that have changed your life or landed you in places where you never thought you’d be. What if you had space online where you could share your story and encourage others on their journeys?

You stalk so many other blogs and get that ‘I could do that’ feeling

One of the things I find myself doing on the rare occasion I’m in an art gallery is looking at a painting of three blue squares and I think … ‘I could do that’ … and be making a bucket load of money too! But that’s not the point. The point is that if you find yourself looking at other blogs and thinking things like ‘wow, I love what she’s done here … I could do that’ or ‘her story is like my story! I could definitely be sharing mine’ then perhaps it’s time for you to start a blog.

The time to start a blog is now

If you nodded your head or thought ‘yup!’ at any point in this post, then it’s time. If you want to start a blog and you haven’t, you’ll just be putting it off. Today is a good day to start a blog.

So what do you reckon? Are you ready to start a blog?
