Makana Confections Kerkeri - Boutique Chocolate Factory sign.

You know it’s a good day when you stumble across a chocolate factory and shop on your way elsewhere. And that’s exactly what happened to a friend and I as we we found ourselves at Makana Confections Kerikeri.

Makana Confections specialises in gift-quality confections – all hand-made and using only the freshest, natural ingredients available to us …

Because we deal directly with our customers (with no middlemen, wholesalers or retailers) Makana products are as fresh as they can be. At Makana we never add artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives and all our confections are made with the finest and freshest ingredients possible to ensure your absolute satisfaction.

Seriously, this was an incredible shop. There are two parts to it – the factory and shop – and then a cafe next door. We wandered into the shop, where we were greeted by free samples (hello delicious!) and had a look at all the amazingly presented packets of truffles, chocolates, sweets and other scrumptious things.

Along one wall there is a glass window where you can look through and see them making all the chocolates there in their little factory. I love being able to see how food, especially bulk food, is created and crafted and still be so beautifully presented and taste so great. It reminded me of Best Ugly Bagels – not in what they were making, but how you could see what they were doing right there in the shop.

Out of the shop and into the cafe, where you could get gelato, coffee, and these amazing little desserts. Yes, we stayed. Yes, we ate yummy things.

If you’re around the area and you need a chocolate fix (heck, even if you don’t need one), do pop into Makana Confections Kerikeri. It’s beautiful, it tastes great, and the people are really friendly. I will definitely be heading here again!
