Visiting the Old Packhouse Market in Kerikeri
When a roadtrip up north to Kerikeri to go skydiving turns into a whole day driving around the area on a Saturday, chances are you’ll stumble across some sort of Farmers’ Market. This is New Zealand, after all. After we watched my friend plummet from a plane, 12,000 feet through the air, we headed into Kerikeri to find something for lunch. It was then that we saw a Famers’ Market happening, so we pulled over and had a wander.
What I love about theses sorts of markets is the range of things that are always there. From fresh fruit and vegetables to hot pork belly sandwiches, from blown-glass necklaces to knitted beanies, from crepes to Mongolian slippers (true story), there’s always something interesting to look at it, and always something yummy to eat. Because we arrived at around 1pm, there were all sort of in pack-up mode, however, we did manage to find some gourmet pies and mussel fritters to keep our bellies happy, and we had a little wander around the stalls.
While doing a bit of a Google for this post, I’ve discovered that it’s an almost permanent market. It was sort of a giveaway with the permanent packhouse structure there, but I didn’t realise it was held so often.
“The Old Packhouse Market is a great place for locals and visitors to source fresh, local produce; meet for coffee, breakfast or brunch, and enjoy some fabulous Northland hospitality! You will find good, honest, farm fresh products plus value added produce, fabulous artisan breads & pastries, delicious “street” food, great coffee and music. The Market is also a good place to purchase gifts from a wide range of talented Arts and Crafts stallholders.” – Website

And it was just that. Apparently, it happens every single Saturday, rain or shine, from 8am – 1:30pm (no wonder they were packing up when we were there). As well as finding out lunch there, we picked up a ciabatta loaf for our dinner that evening, and then headed over the road to Makana Confections … which is a post for another day! Look out for that, headed your way soon!
Have you been to the Old Packhouse Market? Or is there a market you often head along to?
