catching the moments

I was watching This Is Us the other day, doing a little TV series catch up. It was episode 8, the Thanksgiving episode, and one of the characters was talking about catching moments.

“…All these beautiful pieces of life are flying around me and I’m trying to catch them…I know it feels like you have all the time in the world, but you don’t. So stop playing it so cool. Catch the moments of your life, catch them while you’re young and quick, because sooner than you know it, you’ll be old and slow… and there’ll be no more of them to catch. And when a nice boy who adores you offers you pie, say thank you.”

That same day, my calendar pinged a notification. It was a birthday alarm for someone I used to know really well. I haven’t seen them in years and years now. I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say we were close – we weren’t really, looking back – but we were friends. And for an entire summer, we talked, we laughed, we adventured, we hung out, we were catching every moment as they went by.

It’s funny how things bring back memories like that. Whether it be a notification of someone’s birthday on your phone, a place you travel through, a song you hear. It’s funny how memories are triggered by things, how you can be minding your own business and then wham. Hello reminiscing.

I’m here in that same place I was when my friend and I had that great summer. Same town, same time of year, same birthdays. Different me.

While sometimes I know that I miss a lot of the moments, that I don’t catch them fast enough, I am glad I caught those moments all those years ago. The moments that need catching are the ones that can’t be caught on your phone or online. They’re the ones you have with the people around you and the moments you make. They’re the ones you feel, you hear, you taste, you see.

Unfortunately, no nice boy has offered me pie, but if he did, I like to like I’d catch that moment. And I encourage you to do the same. This year I hope you not only be quick and reach out for the moments to catch, but that you recognise them for what the are, and what they will be.

No matter your age, may this year be the year you’re young and quick. May you catch the moments that come your way, and be a part of making new ones for future you to reminisce with.

And if a nice boy offers you pie, say thank you.
