“Do we need more Harry Potter spin-offs?” you ask.
‘Not another spin-off’, you say. And I’d tend to agree with you. But bear with… With The Cursed Child last year and then the announcement of 5 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them films, Harry Potter spin-offs aren’t a foreign idea to us.
While I loved Fantastic Beasts, and The Cursed Child was an okay addition to the series (but shan’t be included in my series re-read), I just have to say I don’t actually think that they should continue making spin-offs, in book or movie form. At least not with the same characters as the HP series.
I’m okay with Fantastic Beasts because the main character isn’t one that’s actually in the Harry Potter series, and to be honest, had very little page-time. But I wouldn’t want to see a full-blown story following someone close to Harry and the Golden Trio.
Having said that, I would love a little short snippet of a story about some characters. Rowling has done a few on Pottermore already, but I’d be all for a page-long story on some of the following characters.
Neville and Hannah Longbottom
We know that our favourite sweater-wearing wizard marries the lovely Hannah Abbot (a Hufflepuff in their year at Hogwarts), and eventually, Hannah becomes the landlady at the Leaky Cauldron. They live above the pub, and Professor Longbottom headed off to Hogwarts to teach Herbology. I’d love a story about Neville and Hannah living above the pub. Not a school story; something about visitors to the Leaky Cauldron or even a visit from an old friend (any of them would do!). Everyday life in the Longbottom household, post-Voldemort.
Teddy Lupin and Victoire Weasley
If Teddy is the only way to keep Lupin and Tonks alive, then so be it. I want more Teddy. At the end of Deathly Hallows, we learn at not only has Teddy been coming over to the Potter’s house about 4 times a week for dinner (a fact which brings James Potter II to say he’d share a room with Albus so Teddy can move in with them), but is caught ‘snogging our Victoire!’ Victoire Weasley is the eldest daughter of Bill and Fleur Weasley, and a story about the two of them would be perfect. Little Lily Potter expresses her hopes that they’ll get married, but who knows? We don’t!
Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas
I feel like we always follow Harry, Ron and Neville about the place, but there were two more boys in that year group. Despite Seamus being ridiculous for the majority of the last book or two, and Dean hooking up with Ginny for a bit there in the middle, I like to think Dean and Seamus get together sometimes and have a Butterbeer. Perhaps even in the Leaky Cauldron, catching up with Neville like the good ol’ days in the Gryffindor boys dormitory. Maybe they both married witches (or muggles!) and take their families on holidays together, and Dean is in charge of making the campfire because Seamus will only make it explode. Yeah…that sounds perfect.
I know that there are hundreds of fan sites full of fan fiction out there in Potterverse, but a little update about these characters from Rowling herself would really make my year. What do you reckon? Up for Harry Potter spin-offs?
Are there any characters you’d like even a glimpse into their lives, post-Hogwarts Battle?
