There’s something about the Kaipara Harbour.
A few hours north of Auckland, through Warkworth and Wellsford, you’ll start seeing turn offs for the Kaipara Harbour. Located on the west coast of New Zealand’s Te Ika a Maui (the north island), most people who have baches there (bach = holiday house, beach house) have them on the southern side of the harbour, but my family has a bach tucked in on the northern side. It takes a little while to get there but it’s worth the trip.

Last weekend five friends and I headed up to the bach for a weekend away, to get out of the city and the hustle and bustle, to leave the busyness of life behind. There’s very little reception up there, and while I couldn’t do that for weeks on end, two days is a breeze, especially when you’re with friends.
While I had packed a literal bucket load of games, some movies and gave people the option of pulling out the kayaks, we spent our time down by the water, hanging out on the beach, falling in sink holes (yours truly), eating great food, lounging in the sun and enjoying one another’s company. It definitely felt like summer was on the way. If this little trip north with friends is a sneak peek of what’s to come this summer, then bring it on.

When was the last time you had a mini getaway? Left the city or work behind for a few days?
