Seeing as I’ve never actually lived in New Zealand’s largest city before (only visited too many times to count), I’m looking forward to discovering many awesome things I’m sure this city holds.
Sunday was only my second day in the city, having arrived after a 10 long bus trip the day before, and in a spur-of-the-moment thing, we jumped in the car and drove to Tahuna Torea Reserve, which turned out be full of birds and, of course, native bush.
It was really awesome to see so many native birds about the place, including the best native bird (in my opinion), the Pukeko. That’s that awesome blue bird in the following photos. They are a swamp bird, and they have these massive feet, fluffy white tails that flick when they walk, and these awesome red masks over their faces. I got to use my new 50 – 300mm lens, which was exciting as! A friend gave me one as soon as I was back in the country, and it’s really neat! I was able to get some great shots without getting too close.

So there we have it! Adventure number 1! With many more to come, I’m sure! I know it’s a little different to seeing photos of castles, and uildings that are 1000 years old, or European rivers and cute boutique stalls, or ancient ruins…but I do hope my updates in the future will still interest you! New Zealand is a beautiful place, and I hope that I can share some of that with all of you wonderful people out there.
You’ll have to continue to bear with me a little while longer, also, on the frequency of blog posts. We don’t have internet in our temporary house, but have to use our neighbour’s, which means actually taking the laptop to their house. Which is a pain. But hopefully our shipping container will our things in it will arrive in the next few weeks, and we’ll be able to move into our actual house. Until then, borrowing WiFi!
