Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves came to Auckland and it was brilliant.
I’ve been a fan of Kacey Musgraves for a few years now, and thanks to Spotify I’ve managed to commit to memory of the words to all her songs. When it was announced that she was gracing Auckland with her presence, my friend and I leapt at the opportunity to get tickets.
See the thing about New Zealand is we’re not a Country country. As in country music isn’t big. You may recall my friends and I going to Stampede Country Music Festival a few years ago, and that was a lot of fun, especially seeing Leann Rimes and Scotty McCreery. While there are pockets of Country-loving humans in NZ, it’s in no way even in a similar league to that of USA (hello, Nashville, one day I will walk down your streets and attended concerts of all my favourite country artists). Not being a Country country means that it’s not often Country singers will even bother showing up down here at the bottom of the world, so when they do, we have to go.
And we’re really glad we did! Kacey Musgraves’ “Oh What a World” Tour included Auckland’s Town Hall this year, so we lined up outside on a Friday evening and chatted to the other people in the line about how no one really knew who she was among our peer groups. Passers by asked us what we were lining up for and when we told them, blank faces returned our information.
But who cares? It was a brilliant show, and we had a lovely evening.
