Welcome to the BoMoSh!

The BoMoSh is a post for Books, Movies and Shows. I’ll be sharing what I’ve read and seen in the last month, and I always welcome suggestions for books, shows and movies. Leave me a comment if you think there’s something that I might enjoy.

Books | 7

  • The Red Scrolls of Magic, by Cassandra Clare and Wesly Chu
  • Weird Things Customers Say in Bookstores, by Jen Campbell
  • Stepsister, by Jennifer Donnelly
  • Ruby Red, by Kerstin Gier, translated by Anthea Bell
  • Broken Throne, by Victoria Aveyard
  • My Name is Not Peaseblossom, by Jackie French
  • In Real Life, by Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang

I tried to keep my page-count down this month after last month’s debacle. I managed to succeed mostly, and read more books this month because of it. I quite enjoyed most of these books – with the exception of Ruby Red, which was just meh – and you can check out my reviews for more details. I had actually read half of Broken Throne before I even read it; the first two stories in this short story compilation by Victoria Aveyard were published as Cruel Crown a wee while ago. The three other stories were new to me though, and you’ll be able to read my review of them all coming soon!

Movies

  • Easy A
  • Dark Phoenix

Can we rant talk about the latest X-Men movie? I was definitely looking forward to it, but I was rather disappointed. As a movie by itself, separate from the rest of the X-Men series, it was a great movie and I actually enjoyed it as a stand-alone story. But throw it into a nearly-20-year-old film series and it was annoying to say the least. After much talk with a friend afterwards, we realised two things: firstly that because of the events in Days of Future Past (where there’s a whole thing with time and it basically it alters the time line and the first three/original X-Men movies don’t happen) the events in Dark Phoenix can technically happen but that’s a major cop-out (it’s like they’ve just started again afresh which would be fine if there was a huge gap between movies and they wanted to reintroduce the X-Men to the world and a new generation…but we’re still here!); and secondly it’s basically just a remake of all the scenes we already had of Jean Grey over the past 19 years, but in a way shorter space of time and all stitched together. The fact that not one by two major characters in the franchise die in this film puts a real damper on all past films and I was well pissed off. So! Good as a movie by itself, anger-inducing as part of the whole.

Easy A is just as hilarious and epic the 100th time I’ve seen it.

Shows

I’ve barely watched anything this month. I mean, I have … but I feel like I haven’t. Late nights out, or I’ve been reading, or playing Sims 4 (HA) have meant that my usual TV time is pushed to the side. I have, however, been watching Younger, and also finally caught up with and finished Riverdale. I also signed up to Amazon Prime so I could watch Good Omens, which I’ve seen some of and I know the rest will be just as amazing.

What have you read and watched this past month?
