After 6 years of having This Splendid Shambles hosted with Bluehost, I finally made the switch to Lyrical Host. It was a big deal! Being with the same hosting company for that long means that I didn’t have any worries, I just got on with blogging and coaching and waited for my hosting to tick over every year. But I had become so complacent in my hosting that I had never really looked into any other alternatives. Until I discovered Lyrical Host.

What is a blog host?

A blog host is a company that holds or looks after all your blog content. It’s the location on the internet where your posts, pages, images and videos are stored so that you can get your content out there into the world.

Every blog has a host, whether you be hosted or self-hosted. I use WordPress, and I am self-hosted, which means that I need to decide, separate from WordPress, where my content is going to be stored online. If I had a WordPress-hosted site, then WordPress itself would look after my content. A hosted WordPress (WordPress .com) is very limiting, and if you’d like control over your content then you’ll really want to look into WordPress .org.

WordPress is just the way that you’re designing and putting together your blogging content, but your host is where your site sits.

A good way to think about it is: if your blog is a series of books that need to be displayed for people to see, then WordPress is the shelf that they sit on – people can see all the books/your blog in a way that’s accessible – and your host is the library or the bookstore. It’s what connects the platform you’re using (shelves) and your content (books) together and allows your browsers (readers) to easily access your content.

Lyrical Host has 3 plans that you can jump on: Tiny, Mighty and Boss. Each of the plans grows as you need it to, but even the Tiny plan comes with more than enough if you’re starting out.

The prices for the monthly plans are:

Tiny: $19.28 USD
Mighty: $30.31 USD
Boss: $41.33 USD

The prices may seem a bit random, but that’s because Lyrical Host is based in the UK, which means the original prices are in GBD. You can toggle between GBD, USD, AUD, EUR, and CAD to see how much it is in your currency (or one you’re more familiar with).

You’ll never get hit with surprise costs either. Many hosting companies will give you seemingly cheaper deals, but then you have to get a bunch of add-ons for security, backups etc and the renewal cost is way more than expected. With Lyrical Host, everything is included. There are no hidden costs, and they don’t increase the price when it comes time to renew.

And that in itself is reason enough. But it doesn’t stop there!

Incredible Customer Support

When I was with Bluehost I have to say I never had any problems. Every time I needed some help, the team were able to help out. But here’s the thing: I never spoke to the same person twice. It took a little longer as I had to explain a few times what I was after (and I think I’m pretty good and outlining things in a very straightforward and simple manner), and there always seemed to be a lot of ‘big company’ vibes with the communication.

When I moved to Lyrical Host, I spoke directly to Joseph Tansley himself, who helped me with my Migration. Another support person jumped in every so often, but Joseph was the main person I was communicating with. If you cast your mind back up the page you’ll remember: Joseph Tansley is one of the founders.

Not only that, but over in the Facebook Group (while I’ll get to in a moment), Jenni Brown is actively posting and engaging and chatting with everyone in the group.

The two founders aren’t some high and mighty people in a shiny tower of corporate companies surrounded by minions doing all the comms. They’re right there in the thick of it, helping people, answering questions, ensuring that our welcome is warm and that our support is of the highest quality.

I have zero doubts that if I ever do run into strife or I have a question, the customer service and support will continue to be this epic.

As I said, I had no trouble with Bluehost, but I also didn’t know what I was missing out on.

Lyrical Host is more than website hosting: it’s really a membership into a community of like-minded people, eager to help, to support and to the resource. The additional resources that you get when you sign up are top-notch, incredibly helpful, and are updated every single month.

Security and Privacy

One of the things Lyrical Host prides itself on is security and privacy. Free malware scans and cleaning are part of every single plan, and when you migrate this is something they do for you. If you’d like them to run a scan in the future, all you have to do is ask. They’ll even help you out to make sure nothing untoward happens to your site.

They also provide integrated features like WordPress login protection, and they’ll install an SSL certificate (the thing that makes your http turn into a https) for free.

Super speedy

It had been less than a day, and my site was faster. This was one of the main reasons for moving to Lyrical Host from Bluehost. The speed of Bluehost was getting me down, and Lyrical Host has already made a huge difference.

Not only do Lyrical Host provide done-for-you integrated speed features, but they also offer a free website speed analysis, which means you can work on getting your site even faster if you need to. All you have to do is log a ticket asking for analysis and someone will jump in there and check out your site, suggest things that you could alter to get your site faster, and even implement them for you if you’re confident doing it yourself.

Backups

Backups have always worried me slightly. What if for some reason my site crashes and I lose over a decade of content!? With Bluehost, I had to either pay extra to have my content backed up or install a plugin that would send backups to my Google Drive.

With Lyrical Host, your website is automatically backed up daily so that if you do need to roll back for some reason, you can do so for the past 30 days. You can also download the backups you need. Worry, gone!

Ethical Company

One of the big draws to Lyrical Host for me was not only all the things I’ve listed above but all the ways they’re helping the world at the same time.

Lyrical Host supports many amazing causes ranging from the Red Cross to Valerie’s Project to One Tree Planted, every year. They also support non-profit organisations such as Kurandaza, Trees for the Future and Reef Check.

While Bluehost was great for what I needed back in 2016 when I signed up for them, there is no way in flippity-flip-flop that they would have this kind of community going on.
