'Where to learn blogging skills when you're starting out' written over the top of a Anjali at This Splendid Shambles writing in a notebook.

When I first started my blog, it was 2009. And blogging, while it had been around for a while, was still relatively ‘new’. People were still rocking their Blogger accounts, perhaps using Tumblr, and there weren’t very many places where I could go to to learn how to actually start and upkeep a blog. Fast forward, and I’ve been blogging for well over 10 years, and now I wanna give you some tips as to where to learn blogging skills when you’re starting out.

You’ll see a lot of repeating name in this list, and that’s honestly because they’re some of the best bloggers and blog coaches out there and who have some excellent stuff to help you out.

Of course there will be a lot more than this (feel free to tell me about them in the comments!), but I hope that these incredible women (and a few men!) give you some really great starting points so that you can learn blogging skills to help you start and grow your blog.

Let’s do this!

Blogs

If you do a search online for anything, chances are incredibly high you’ll come across a blog post. In the top 10 results, there are going to be blog posts written by bloggers who a) know what they’re talking about and b) have probably been doing this a while.

Which means you have a gold mine of blogging tips you can soak up, for free, right there on someone’s blog.

Here are a few blogs I recommend checking out:

Anita Dykstra

Fellow New Zealander, Anita Dykstra is an award-winning travel blogger (based in Albania) who has been at it for a loooong time. Anita has some brilliant resources (I’ve listed some in their appropriate sections below), but also has a blog full of helpful information. She says herself, ‘here you’ll find free resources, juicy info and our unique angles and concepts on topics like blog marketing, Pinterest, systems, email marketing, SEO and more!’ And honestly, it’s fantastic.

Natty Writes

Natty is a blog writer for business, and while you might not need her (excellent!) writing services right now, her blog is full of epic articles on blogging, no matter where in your blogging journey you are. As the heading of her blog reads: “here you’ll find a mix of blog & email writing tips, how-to’s for blogging in your business, tangible resources & of course a little BTS of a writer’s life along the way.” And that’s exactly what you’ll get. Definitely check it out!

Thrive Together Blog

Bree Pair at Thrive Together has a chock-a-block blog section dating back to 2017, which is a mix of articles and tips, as well as podcast episodes, interviews with other bloggers and creators, and more. Bree does a lot of other awesome things to in the blogging space, so be sure to wander around her website for more of what she offers!

The She Approach

Ana at The She Approach has been a blog coach for a long time now, and knows what she’s talking about. There are so many great articles on her blog that are going to help you learn blogging skills, whether you are a complete newbie or you want to upskill in some areas. She also has some great blog posts on blogging adjacent things, too.

Margaret Bourne

Another fellow blog coach, Margaret Bourne has an incredible blog full of tips and how-tos when it comes to blogging. She has lots of blog posts for new bloggers, too, so you’re in good hands! Margaret writes about things like productivity tips, affiliate marketing, connecting with other bloggers, and so much more. She also has a Facebook group, which I’ve listed below.

A Beautiful Mess

Now, you may know the team at A Beautiful Mess as the DIY Queens, posting lots of home décor, recipes, craft projects and more lifestyle-based content. But they’ve been blogging for a heck of a long time, and they know their stuff. They have a blogging tips section on their blog, full of helpful advice. They also have a podcast.

Boss Lady Bloggers

Genasys at Boss Lady Bloggers (another blog coach – we have all the best tips, you know 😉) also has a great collection of blogging tips on her blog. She’s got everything from making money online, to figuring out your ‘why’, to lists of blog post ideas.

Spark Media Concepts

Run by Amy Reinecke & Jennifer Draper, the Spark Media Concepts blog has got everything from blogging basics to monetisation, from blogging as a business to must-have blogging tools. They also have a podcast (listed below) and other courses and tools to help you learn blogging skills!

This Splendid Shambles

Yes, okay, I’m adding in my own here. But have you explored my Blogging Tips section? There is so much in there! I started writing about blogging in (*scrolls back to see*) 2012, and now there are over 100 blog posts dedicated to blogging and blogging adjacent things (think Pinterest, email, socials etc).

YouTube

If you’re more of a visual learner, then YouTube might be the one for you! I will often go to YouTube if I need to see someone teach me something, or I can’t quite figure something out by myself and want a quick video tutorial. There are, of course, many YouTube channels that are rife with blogging tips for you to devour, but here are some that I’ve used in the past.

Nakisha Wynn

Now I haven’t’ seen a lot of Nakisha Wynn‘s videos, but the couple I have seen have been really helpful. She talks a lot about making money online, and one of those ways is through blogging. Nakisha has a couple of Playlists that would be helpful for you starting your blog, including a Blogging for Beginners playlist.

She Dreams All Day by Mia

As well as a blog, Mia has a YouTube Channel by the same name, She Dreams All Day. While she talks a lot about social meida, there is a playlist of Blogging Tips that is worth checking out.

The She Approach by Ana

Ana has been both blogging and running a YouTube channel (The She Approach) for a long time now, so she has a great number of videos (I think about 50 at the writing of this blog post) you can binge and learn from. She’s got videos on affiliate marketing, resources, and SEO tips (among others) and also has a couple of interview videos with other online creators.

Perfecting Blogging by Sophia Lee Blogging

Sophia Lee has a blog and channel called Perfecting Blogging, and her goal with her YouTube is to help you start a blog that actually makes you money. She has lots of content, dating back several years, and while she covers lots of online content tips on her channel, she also has a playlist dedicate to all things blogging.

Sara Marie Blog on YouTube

Sara Marie is a blogger and helps other bloggers grow their online presence. Her YouTube covers topics to help creators and entrepreneurs build passive income. And, as we know, blogging is a great way to do that! Check out her Playlists for more blogging-specific content.

The Confident Blogger by Margaret Bourne

Margaret doesn’t have too many videos at the moment on her The Confident Blogger YouTube channel, but she’s giving it a refresh and starting to add more, according to a post in her Facebook group. It’s definitely one to keep an eye on!

Podcasts

Prefer to learn as you do chores, drive, or head out on a walk? I get it!

Podcasts are big because you can multitask (okay, there are probably other reasons why they’re a bit deal, but surely that’s one of them?), and when it comes to blogging, we’re often juggling other ‘life’ so it’s good to be able to fit in our learning where we can.

Just be aware: you might need to have a notes app open and ready to jot anything down if you’re doing other things!

Some of these are blog-specific, and others are more about digital content, but you can absolutely take their tips and adapt them for blogging, or learn through them for other areas of your online world (email, affiliate marketing, social media, podcasting etc).

Courses

If you’d rather work at your own pace and really deep dive into your new blogging life, then a course might be a great option for you! While I’ve discontinued my own course, there are so many excellent creators out there who have blogging courses.

Full disclaimer: I haven’t done all of these myself, but have enjoyed the creator’s other online content, so if I were needing a blogging course, these are the ones I’d be checking out.

Digital resources and guides

Need just a quick how-to or guide? Finding digital resources or guides online is a brilliant way to get a little bit more than a blog post might offer, but doesn’t commit you to do a full course. There are, once again, a lot of options, but here are some ideas to get you started, both free and paid.

The Ultimate Blogging Resource Library from The She Approach

Ana has lots of freebies in her Ultimate Blogging Resource Library, as well some paid goodies. She also lists some tools that she uses and other course that might be helpful for you.

Freebies Library from The Blog Societies

The Blog Societies has a number of great freebies listed on their Freebies page. Included in there is a blog post checklist, as well as some templates and other goodies.

She Dreams All Day Learning Hub

Mia has a lot of free resources available to you in her Learning Hub. Guides like how to make passive income, build your email list, and templates for ClickUp to help you run your business or blog.

This Splendid Shambles on Etsy

I have a shop, too! It’s called This Splendid Shambles (surprise surprise) but it’s on Etsy. These are digital guides, resources, and tools, especially good when this is your first time starting a blog. As well as guides and tools, you can find things like planners and stock photos, if you’re looking for that kind of help, too.

Online communities

Online communities are a fantastic way to learn the skills you need to be a blogger, too.

Other people’s thoughts and opinions and experiences can really help shape our own. It’s also brilliant to be a part of a community where you can ask questions and seek advice. If you search for ‘blogging’ on Facebook, there are so many groups. But here are some that I’m apart of (or have bee in the past) that I think will help.

This Week In Blogging

This Week In Blogging is a Facebook Group that is linked to a free weekly newsletter. Highly recommended the newsletter, too, as they will give up-to-date news from the blogging world, and offer some insight into what they’re experiencing as bloggers, too. While it’s less about the skills you might need, it’s still a really helpful group to get involved with, as the chatter on the group may help you in your own blogging endeavours, too.

Lyrical Host Blog & Business Squad

Okay, so this one is a bit niche, but if you’re a Lyrical Host user then you also get access to their Facebook group!

This is one of my my fave groups, and I learn lots from them. They will sometimes do ‘residencies’ which means someone from the community shares about a certain blog-related topic over the course of the month. They also post updates about blog news, tips for various blogging aspects, and are ready to help you with your blog.

If you’ve been looking for a blog host, I highly recommend them.

Bold Beginner Bloggers

Bold Beginner Bloggers is my free Facebook group for women. We chat weekly about blogging, I share blogging tips and tricks, we get to encourage each other, and share what we’re working on. We’d love to have you join us!

SEO for Bloggers

Nina Clapperton is a genius when it comes to SEO (search engine optimisation), and her SEO for Bloggers is a great group to join on Facebook. It’s free, and you can explore a lot of the past posts to upskill and learn from others, and be on the lookout for future posts.

The Blog It Better Society – Blogging Tips & Support

This is Margaret Bourne’s free Facebook group, The Blog It Better Society. As well as tips and, Margaret runs daily posts where you can get involved with the community. And while you may not think of this as learning, with so many people chatting and sharing, there is always something to learn from others.

The Ultimate Blog Roadmap Membership

Created by Amy Reinecke & Jennifer Draper at Spark Media Concepts, The Ultimate Blog Roadmap is a monthly membership that helps you ‘build a blog-based business without the guesswork, overwhelm or isolation’. Straight from their website! I follow Amy and Jennifer on Instagram and they always have brilliant tips on blogging, and they’re definitely people I would have loved to have learned from when I was starting my own blog .

The Blogging Room

I also have my own membership, The Blogging Room, which is a group to support you as you blog. We have monthly masterclasses, taught by experts in their fields, resources every month to help you upskill and grow, and 1:1 support if you need it. We’d love to have you in TBR!

Blogging coaches and mentors

And it would be remiss of me not to include a section about blogging coaches, being one myself. If you’ve been reading this blog post and thinking ‘these are all great places to go to when I need to figure out where to learn blogging skills … but I’d much rather work alongside someone and get personalised advice and support’ … then a blog coach is going to be for you!

Anjali Kay

Cheeky adding me in there? I don’t think so. 😉 I work with women to start and grow their blogs, and do it with confidence. I absolutely love helping women in their blogging endeavours and there’s something so incredible about seeing people light up when they talk about their blogs and what they’re achieving. I love it! You can learn more about 1:1 coaching here.

Margaret Bourne

Mentioning Margaret here again. She takes all her experience in blogging, PR, and marketing, and turns it into simple, step-by-step support to help you grow your blog. Whether it’s one-on-one coaching, an audit that actually gives you doable next steps, or resources like courses and templates, Margaret is all about helping you stop guessing and start blogging with purpose. Which we LOVE. Definitely check out her services.

Bree Pair

Bree offers blog and content coaching, too. While she positions herself as a coach for content creators, it would definitely be worth checking in with her about blog coaching in particular. There are two different options that she offers, depending where you’re at. Bree came and talked to us in a masterclass for The Blogging Room in 2025, all about monetizing with ads and affiliates and it was so so good!

Jessica at The Blog Societies

Jessica offers 1:1 Blog Coaching in two different packs: a one-off call or 3 x calls. Whether you need help with creating a blogging or social media strategy, you want to optimise your content, or work with someone who can help you build your blogging business, Jessica might be the option for you!

So you’ve definitely got options when it comes to where to learn blogging skills, especially when you’re getting started. And you might even find that you use a combination of all these things – I certainly did, and still do to this day.

Because that’s the thing: Blogging is a long game and even though I’ve been at this for a long time now, I’m still learning. There are still things that I can be upskilling in, learning, and changing and tweaking. And I hope this list of things help you in your own blogging journey.
