Sometimes life gets away from us and even if we have all the best intentions, our blog time can be lacking. However! There is still a lot you can do even if you only have an hour to work on your blog. And all of it is beneficial.

Being a blogger is more than just writing blog posts (though important!). We need to be looking after our blogs as well, and by carving out even just an hour to work on your blog … it can make a huge difference to how your blog does.

Let’s take a look at some of the things I would do if I only had an hour or so to do some work on my blog.

Things to do if you have just an hour to work on your blog

1. Brainstorm blog post ideas

Use this time to jot down new ideas for blog posts. Brainstorming can be a great way to keep your content fresh. There are a few ways you could go about this:

  • Get a pen and paper and just brainstorm whatever comes to mind in your niche
  • Strategically brainstorm based on blog posts that have done well
  • Look at where the topic gaps in your blog are and see what you might be able to do to fill them
  • Search on Answer the Public for topics that you could write about
  • See if there are comments on your blog posts that ask questions, and see if you can create a blog post to answer them.

2. Update an old blog post

Choose an older post that could use a refresh. Update information, improve readability, and optimise it for current topics. You might also do things like change up the images if they’re older and aren’t relevant. You could also add some paragraphs if you need to. Check out this blog post for lots of tips on updating blog posts.

3. Do keyword research for upcoming posts

Keywords are really important for our blog posts. Without them, it’s harder to grow our blog traffic. If you’ve got your brainstormed ideas from before or from another brainstorming session, take an hour to do your keyword research for them. Remember to find keywords that work for your blog and not ones that are completely unattainable.

4. Do an audit of your blog

Sometimes, especially if we’ve been blogging for a long time, we can forget to update things like pages, our footer, our links. Sometimes we’ve forgotten to change the colours of buttons or update social links. Doing a blog audit is something that is perfect for spending just an hour on your blog.

5. Update any pages that need updating

In your blog audit, you may find that your pages are in a bit of a shambles. Spend your hour updating them. This might look like:

  • Updating the copy/words that are on the page
  • The links that lead to your socials, services, paid products, email list etc
  • Changing up the layout to better suit your readers
  • Updating the images
  • Making sure that the contact forms are working

6. Write an email or two to your lists

Depending on how long it takes you to write an email to your list, you could write one or draft two. Or however many you can do in an hour. Think about what they might like to or need to hear at the moment. Is it that you have a new blog post you’ve shared recently? Or perhaps it’s a sale you’re running, or a new download you have available for them.

7. Create social media graphics

If you’re on social media like Instagram, then you can use this time to create some posts. Perhaps you have blog posts to promote. Or a new freebie, like I mentioned. Whatever it is, do some planning for your socials and get some things scheduled.

8. Or Pinterest Pins

I take about an hour each month to create all my Pins for the coming weeks. These are for blog posts, but also any services I’ve added to my blog coaching, and sometimes to sign up for my email list. They’re quick and easy to make if you’ve got some Canva templates on the go, and make sure you add your keywords and descriptions to your Pins so that people can find them easily.

9. Go back and add links in old posts that point to new ones

Interlinking your blog posts helps improve SEO and keeps readers exploring more of your content. This is something I do forget quite a lot 🙈 but head on back to some of your older blog posts and see if any blog posts you’ve written recently are able to be linked. This creates a beautiful web of content for your readers and for Google.

10. Reach out to a fellow blogger for collaboration

If you’ve got some blogging friends or acquaintances in your niche that you think might be up for a guest post, reach out to them! Bloggers love connecting with bloggers, especially if there are collaboration opportunities involved. Remember to introduce yourself if you don’t talk that often, be kind and respectful.

You don’t have to be writing a blog post to be blogging. Your blog is more than ‘just the posts’. And your hour today might be just what your blog needs at the moment.
