This past weekend one of my friends from high school flew up to Auckland from our home town and spent the weekend with me. It was really awesome! It was her first time on a plane, and she mentioned that she had never been on a ferry either, so I made sure that we took the ferry across the harbour to Devonport for lunch on her first day. On the second day we went shopping and I bought too much. On Saturday though, we took a bus to Roz’s place, then drove down to Butterfly Creek. I had never heard of Butterfly Creek before my friend had mentioned that it was something she might like to while she was here.
Butterfly Creek, it turns out, is this mini zoo kind of place, where they have small collections of animals like hairy spiders (ew!), some huge crocodiles, parrots, Nemo and all his friends, lizards of varying species, and a entire farm section, which wasn’t new at all as I grew up on a mini farm and we had pigs and goats next door, and our own sheep, rabbits and guinea pigs etc etc. But it was still super neat to go and pet all the animals and see all the excited children who never really spend time with farm animals when they live in the city. There was also a huge dinosaur park included, which had a whole bunch of ‘real size’ dinosaurs that made noises and moved. Very exciting.

The best bit of the place though was what it was named for: the Butterfly house. You walk into this huge room that’s at a constant 28 degrees Celsius (and humid! So humid!) and everywhere you look there are butterflies. There were just flying around everywhere, or perching and hanging from trees, some were sitting on bananas, some were dodging the little birds that were also in the enclosure… Everywhere. They even came and landed on you and just sat there for ages. So.Awesome! There was also some turtles in the little pond in the enclosure, and some monkeys in their own enclosure within the butterfly house.

There were so many different species of butterflies and also some moths, but my favourites were these two:

So that was Butterfly Creek. It was a little expensive for a place that only took about an hour and half to have a good look around but it was really fun, and I’m super glad we did it. If you’re in Auckland and you haven’t been, do go and check it out. It’s really neat, and there were so many kids around with ecstatic, excited, and then exhausted faces. Take your kids. Take your family. Take your butterfly-loving friends.
