The Big Hoot came to Auckland.
In celebration of the Child Cancer Foundation‘s 40th anniversary in 2018, artists painted 48 large owls which were then distributed around different locations in Auckland city. At the end of April, the large owls will be auctioned off, and all the money will go to Child Cancer Foundation to aid them in their continuing research, care and support programmes. The owls will then head off to their next location. As well as the 48 large owls, schools around Auckland have painted Owlets, smaller version, which you can also find scattered around the city.
Our adventure begins with the downloading of the app, some good walking shoes and then an afternoon spent wandering the streets of Auckland’s CBD finding as many owls as we could. My friend and I managed to find all the owls in central Auckland on one day, then spent another day later on, driving around the city finding the remainder.
Despite the fact that we saw more families out and about jotting down the unique code on each owl for the app (so you can keep track of which ones you’ve found), and taking photos with them, we really did have a fun time, even though we’re in our 20s. I’ve gathered together some of my favourite owls from across the city for your perusal.

There’s still time for you to join in on The Big Hoot. If you’re not worried about catching them all, head into Auckland’s CBD and following your Big Hoot app (or pick up a map from public posts like the library, the art gallery, museum etc) and find the ones in town. That’ll give you a good idea without too much energy.
Have you been collecting owls for The Big Hoot? Did you find them all?
