Body Worlds Exhibition Comes to Auckland

If you ever get the chance to see the Body Worlds Exhibition, do it.

Never heard of the Body Worlds Exhibition before? Neither had I until it arrived in Auckland this year. Essentially it’s an exhibition designed to educate the public about the human body; how it works, what happens when we put bad things into it (fatty foods, sugar etc), what cancerous organs look like … the list goes on.

The BODY WORLDS exhibits are one of the most successful travelling exhibitions in the world. On display since 1995, they have attracted more than 44 million visitors in over 115 cities across America, Africa, Asia, and Europe .- Website

The exhibition showcases real human organs, muscles, skin, blood vessels and even slivers of brain. It’s not for the feint-hearted, perhaps, but if you’re interested in how your body works, and the incredible things that it’s capable of, then it’s a must see.

Wonderfully presented, with intricate details being pointed out to you on plaques and signs, you’ll see a range of parts as you wander through. As well as the organs and bits and pieces displayed in cabinets, they had incredible bodies without skin (preserved in some sort of goo) in all sorts of posses. There’s a ballet dancer, a swimmer (chopped length-ways so you can see where all the organs fit), gymnast and walkers. Amazing. Truly amazing.

Right at the end of the exhibition there was a wall that read ‘Before I die…’, which allowed people to write their bucket-list moments on it. Some were a little sad (‘to get better’, ‘to find happiness’), some were beautiful (‘see humans respect Mother Earth and all who live here’, ‘travel the world’, ‘save the bees’), and some were hilarious (‘see Loki alive again’, ‘be a ninja turtle’, ‘become a meme lord’). Definitely worth lingering there a while and reading people’s responses.
