Exploring North Head & the Disappearing Gun

Last Saturday I posted about another Auckland Adventure: our trip to Devonport. Well, on that same day we also went up North Head, which is one of the hills in Devonport, and is also where there’s a old war bunker/barracks type thing. There are a whole lot of tunnels underground that had little (and creepy) rooms connected to them, that they used to use in the 1800s (which is super old for New Zealand), and you can grab a torch and take a slightly terrifying stroll through them.  There’s a little bit of graffitti (good one, Alfie!), but not as much as I was expecting.

As well as having some small (ish) old guns on the hill top, there’s also this huge gun that is called the Disappearing Gun, because it was made in such a way that it could be out on the hill, and then wrenched back into the hill, so it was hidden from sight. It’s pretty huge, and pretty cool to climb on. I mean…what?

We also discovered this old pink square building that was slightly falling to bits. It had weird marks on the wall, kinda like a measuring tape, but with letters. Not sure what that was about, but there we have it.

It also has these fabulous views from all around the hill. Auckland city in one direction, our place in another, Cheltenham (no, not like Gloucestershire, England) beach the other, Rangitoto island…beautiful views.

North Head and the Disappearing Gun. Possibly the title of a murder mystery, but a fun adventure all the same. It’s a good thing to do on the same day as checking out Devonport, because neither take all day. The end of time there was farewelled with an amazing sunset, which I will leave you with.
