Book Haul #37

The first weekend of November each year means that here in Auckland the ASB Stadium holds it’s annual 24 Hour Book Sale.

From 10am on Saturday morning, the book sale is open until 2am Sunday morning (yes, in the middle of the night). It reopens at 10am on Sunday, and finally shuts for another year at 2pm, Sunday. 24 hours of book buying wonders. This is now the third year I’ve been, and while my hauls have been progressively getting smaller, it’s still the greatest weekend of the year. Unlike my first year when I bought 43 books, and last year, when I bought 38, this year’s haul was only about 20 books. I put it down to the fact that there weren’t many books that I wanted to read, and those that I did pick up, I already had. It’s a miracle I found as many as I did really.

I’ve broken the haul into 3, and today is the first instalment.

Sing you Home, and Plan Truth, by Jodi Picoult

Each year I manage to find books by Jodi Picoult that I don’t have yet. I feel like I must nearly have them all now, and while have yet to actually read them all, I have read about half of them. Both these books were ones that I was missing, so I was glad to find them.

Fergus Crane, by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell

If you’ve been around here for a little while, then you may know that one of my favourite children’s series is The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. I love the series a lot, so when I found this book on the kids’ table, I wasn’t going to just leave it there. This will take no more than an hour to read, but I love their stories and the illustrations throughout. They’re always great tales.

The Alchemyst, by Michael Scott

I’d seen this book around in a few places, and while I don’t know anyone who’s read it, it did sound kind of fun. For $2 you can take a chance like this. Have you read this?

The Silmarillion, by J.R.R. Tolkien

At sales like this there are always things you can count on: finding copies of Dan Brown’s DaVinci Code, and also Lord Of the Rings. While we have a family copy of the Silmarillion somewhere, I wanted one for myself, and even though it’s less popular than LOTR or The Hobbit I did manage to find a few copies of it in the mix.
