Book Haul #39

The first weekend of November each year means that here in Auckland the ASB Stadium holds it’s annual 24 Hour Book Sale.

From 10am on Saturday morning, the book sale is open until 2am Sunday morning (yes, in the middle of the night). It reopens at 10am on Sunday, and finally shuts for another year at 2pm, Sunday. 24 hours of book buying wonders. This is now the third year I’ve been, and while my hauls have been progressively getting smaller, it’s still the greatest weekend of the year. Unlike my first year when I bought 43 books, and last year, when I bought 38, this year’s haul was only about 20 books. I put it down to the fact that there weren’t many books that I wanted to read, and those that I did pick up, I already had. It’s a miracle I found as many as I did really.

The Fires of Heaven, by Robert Jordan

It’s taken me years and years to collect the Wheel of Time series. With 14 books, and not wanting to buy them new, it’s a mission. I’m nearly there, however, and now I’m only missing 3. Have I read them all, you ask? No. I’ve read 1-4 and then life happened. One day I will continue the series, because it’s one that I really do enjoy. But every book is huge, and I’m more one for reading several shorter books over one ginormous one. Perhaps this summer I’ll read number five.

The Amber Spyglass, by Philip Pullman

I have a confession to make: I still have read The Golden Compass (or The Northern Lights, as it’s sometimes called). But it is one that I really do need to read one day, so there’s no point having number one and not any of the others. Thankfully, The Amber Spyglass was there in abundance, and it was only a matter of picking out the better copy.

Half Moon Investigations, by Eoin Colfer

Usually I come away from book sales like this with at least one Artemis Fowl book. I’m only missing books 7 and 8 (and have also yet to read them), but alas, I couldn’t find them. I did find Half Moon Investigations though, which I hadn’t realised the Colfer had written, so I picked that up. If it’s anything like the Artemis Fowl series, then it’ll be a good fun read.

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte

A bit of a random classic in this mix, but it’s always fun when you stumble across Penguin Classics in amongst the Stephen King novels.

Frozen, by Melissa De La Cruz and Michael Johnston

This is one that I have seen around the place quite a bit, and while it wouldn’t have been a go-to sort of book usually, it was one of the only YA-type novels I found this year so I thought I’d give it a go. Have you read this one? What did you think?
