REWARD OFFERED: Apprentice to The Villain wanted for treason (light), magical property damage (alleged), and one incident involving a weaponized scone (accurate). Frequently seen with a grumpy frog (crowned, judgmental). Answers to “Evie” or “Stop that.”

Evie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings,” and the next, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem, murder plots, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding, sharp-jawed, walking disaster of a boss.

Now, with a magical prophecy unraveling, assassins showing up in the break room, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire—or her dignity, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread.
Being evil-adjacent was never part of the five-year plan. But then again…neither was falling for The Villain.

A magical office comedy with grumpy bosses, snarky frogs, and definitely-not-feelings.

What is Accomplice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maherer about?

Accomplice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maherer is the third book in the Assistant to the Villain series, and it continues the story of Evie and her job with the Villain.

Evie Sage thought she was signing up for a safe little desk job when she started working for the Villain. A bit of paperwork, maybe the odd errand. Instead, she’s suddenly working for the kingdom’s most feared villain … dodging assassins in the staff kitchen, unravelling a dangerous prophecy, and being surrounded by other people in the ‘office’ who are more than she was expecting, character and job-wise.

“You’d be surprised how easy it is for some to ignore the problems of the world if they aren’t impacted by them.”

In Accomplice to the Villain, Evie and the Villain are still working on the Prophecy of Renedawn, trying to figure out how to break Kingsley’s curse (which is getting worse by the day).

World domination was never on her to-do list. But falling for The Villain? That’s a disaster all its own.

My thoughts on Accomplice to the Villain

I read Assistant to the Villain a few months after it came out and I fell in love. With the world, with the characters, with the storyline. When the second in the series, Apprentice to the Villain, was released, I re-read the first book even though I had read it only about 8 months prior.

There was no way I was missing the third instalment, and it was just as wonderful as I was expecting.

“You aren’t hungry. You are in love, you emotionally stunted fool.”

Aside from the wonderful characters (many of which definitely grow in this book) and the almost ridiculous storylines going on, the banter and the sheer hilarity of these books are definitely a drawcard for me. The humour, the sass, the banter, the sarcasm and wit … chef’s kiss. The new and also the ‘about time’ relationships between the characters was brilliantly done, and I just love all the characters so much.

“Oh, of course. Mediocre men receiving positions of power they haven’t earned because of their birthrights. How against the grain.”

For some reason, I absolutely thought this was a trilogy, but there is more to come, which obviously I am very excited about. At the writing of this review, no news on a fourth book has been released yet, which isn’t surprising, as Accomplice has only recently come out.

Have you read this series? What do you think?
