Set in early nineteenth-century BritainBloodlust & Bonnets follows Lucy, an unworldly debutante who desires a life of passion and intrigue—qualities which earn her the attention of Lady Violet Travesty, the leader of a local vampire cult.

But before Lucy can embark on her new life of vampiric debauchery, she finds herself unexpectedly thrown together with the flamboyant poet Lord Byron (“from books!”) and a mysterious bounty-hunter named Sham. The unlikely trio lie, flirt, fight, and manipulate each other as they make their way across Britain, disrupting society balls, slaying vampires, and making every effort not to betray their feelings to each other as their personal and romantic lives become increasingly entangled. Both witty and slapstick, elegant and gory, Emily McGovern’s debut graphic novel pays tribute to and pokes fun at beloved romance tropes, delivering a joyous, action-packed world of friendship and adventure.

My thoughts on Bloodlust and Bonnets

Emily McGovern’s My Life as a Background Slytherin is one of my favourite comics. It’s so genius and wonderfully humorous. When I saw that Emily McGovern was releasing a graphic novel, I was both intrigued and excited. It didn’t disappoint.

Bloodlust and Bonnets follows the story of a young debutante in early nineteenth-century Britain who is visited one day by Lady Violet Travesty, who is the leader of a vampire cult. Lady Travesty asks Lucy is she would consider joining, but before Lucy can say yay or nay, she finds herself teaming up with Lord Byron (“from books!”) and Sham, the bounty-hunter. Their escapades take them all over the place, including Byron’s talking castle, society balls, and dark dungeons, all while trying to find Lady Travesty, but not all for the same reasons.

This was a really fun graphic novel. The characters chaotic and crazy yet brilliant, and the story line perhaps even more so. Did the story make sense? Not really, no. Was the artwork brilliant? As always, yes. Basically it was just a really fun book that highly entertained.

Have you read either My Life as a Background Slytherin or Bloodlusts and Bonnets?
