The Grounds in Henderson has to be one of the coolest cafes I’ve been to.
I don’t know what I was expecting when I headed along to the June #NZBloggers Brunch Club. I didn’t really look into The Grounds before we arrived, and it was a long drive from my place so I wasn’t even 100% sure we were in the right spot. But we made it. And it was awesome.
“The Grounds is a modern family eatery nestled amongst five acres of lush urban park in the beautiful Waitakeres. People come from all over Auckland to discover premium Kiwi cuisine, gorgeous wine and down-to-earth service. It’s an experience worth travelling for.” – website

Decor and Location
The decor in The Grounds is pretty amazing – they have incredible lights all across the ceiling, beautiful greenery tumbling down the shelves above the bar/servery, and little nooks everywhere for large groups and functions. There were bookshelves lining the back wall where we were sitting, full of old books, and other quirky items. Definitely my kind of place.
They’re part of Woah! Studios which is a film studio, park and entertainment venue. The Woah! Studios Playground is insanely cool; it looks like a giant crocheted parachute that the kids can clamber all over. There are a bunch of other interesting playground activities there too, as well as puppet shows and productions.
The Grounds: Food
While the coffee sizes were on the small end (I got to the end of my drink and thought there would be more, but alas), the food was really good, with the added bonus of locally produced ingredients. I ordered the Brunch Burger, which was a beef patty, with fried egg, gruyere cheese, bacon, watercress, and deli pickles.
When I order a burger, or a large sandwich, the first thing I do is take the lid off, pop it to the side and save for last (or not eat it at all if I’m full), so it was hilarious to find that they had already done that for me when the burger came out. Thanks guys! Ha.
Brunch Club
Heading along to Brunch Club is also a joy. It’s great to catch up with other bloggers who you haven’t seen since last brunch club, and meet new bloggers who have both been around for a while and you’ve just never connected, or are really new and are making those first connections.
Have you been to The Grounds?
