The BoMoSh stands for Books, Movies and Shows, and that’s exactly what we talk about on these monthly posts. I share what I’ve read and seen in the last month, and I always welcome suggestions for books, shows and movies. Leave me a comment if you think there’s something that I might enjoy.

I read some pretty excellent books this month: Thunderhead was amazing (although I don’t know if I liked it quite as much as Scythe), Meet Cute (which was our Blogger’s Bookshelf Book Club book choice for June) was super sweet and had some really adorable stories in it, and Portuguese Irregular Verbs was so odd but also delightful at the same time. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Rebel of the Sands, by Alwyn Hamilton until I dived into the sequel, Traitor to the Throne. Must get my hands on the next in the series, which has recently come out: Hero at the Fall. Shout out to the awesome team at Hachette NZ for sending me a copy of The Summer of Us, which I also read in the last week, and also War Storm, which I began right at the end of the month.

I’m super proud of myself for actually watching some movies this month! It’s a regular occurrence of late that I go an entire month without seeing a movie, favouring TV shows and, most recently, youtube clips like that of Wil Wheaton’s TableTop series on Geek and Sundry (#boardgamegeek). But I had the house to myself one weekend, and I was working on a painting project, so I popped Love, Simon on and then promptly continued onto Every Day, two movies which I really wanted to see from this year’s releases. Really enjoyed both of them, and while they were a little different than their book version, I still think they were good adaptations.

I managed to watch a couple of Netflix movies too, something I rarely do because I hate watching movies by myself, but man these two were funny.

I also saw Solo: A Star Wars Story in the theatre, and while it was more of an entertaining movie rather than a thinking movie, I actually really enjoyed it. Too many of the more recent films have had almost too much plot, too many characters, too many double meanings and things that you really have to think about for them to make sense. Solo, I think, was easy. It was an easy film to follow, the plot was simple, and action still great, the comedy good (although not hilarious like in some of the recent ones), and it was just a fun, entertaining movie…much like the original ones were. Let me know what you thought of it if you’ve seen it (spoiler-free, though, please, so others can read it even if they haven’t seen it).

Shows

Supernatural has reigned supreme this month. I finally managed to finish watching season 11 (I realise how far behind I am, yes), and I was reminded of how much I love that show. I also continued watching The Mindy Project (thoroughly enjoyable, would recommend). That’s pretty much been it, actually!

Next Month…

Books – I have a bunch of books from Hachette NZ to read this coming month and I am so looking forward to them! Included in that list are War Storm by Victoria Aveyard, Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart, From Twinkle with Love by Sandhya Menon, and Smoke in the Sun by Renee Ahdieh. Then there’s a pile that I’ve bought recently too, and I’m sure there will be more. I won’t get through all of them, but we’ll give it a good shot.

Movies – ‘The Incredibles 2’ is finally dropping this coming month and ohmygosh you guys, we’ve waited 14 years for this and move aside children! This is my movie! You know nothing of waiting! I’m also looking forward to the next Marvel film which is ‘Antman and the Wasp’ (an unremarkable name, but apparently that’s what we’re going with?), and also ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’. Who knows if I’ll actually see any of those at the theatre, but fingers crossed I can make that happen.

Shows – Orphan Black season 5 has recently been added to Netflix AUSNZ so I really need to watch that. If you haven’t seen Orphan Black, get.on.to.it. Even if it’s just for Tatiana Maslany’s incredible acting (seriously, who is that woman? A-mah-zing).
