I took a visit to the vintage second-hand store in Royal Oak
If you’ve been around here any length of time, then you may know that I love opshopping (charity stores, thrift stores). I also can’t resist a second-hand furniture store. So when an opportunity arose to check out the Royal Oak Traders, I leapt at the chance to go and explore.
💡 Please note: The Royal Oak Traders don’t currently have a website. However, you can check out their Localist listing here.
What is the Royal Oak Traders?
Located in Auckland, the Royal Oak Traders is a second-hand shop that specialises in buying and selling furniture. Many of the items that you can find are large furniture pieces made of oak, kauri and rimu – many of which you can find lined up outside the shop, jutting onto the footpath – but there is an eclectic collection of small items, too, overflowing in the shop.
Like, very eclectic.
As in, you might spend hours in there just rummaging through old boxes of old things, or carefully moving precarious piles of things around just so you can get to that one interesting item you spot peeking out of a shelf.

If you’re looking for a vintage find or something super quirky, then Royal Oak Traders is the place to visit.
(But also don’t go with the need to find something. It’s more of a ‘browse and see what they have’ type of place. Nothing is super organised, but you will find most of the books with the books, blankets with blankets, tools with the tools, etc. And that’s where the organisation pretty much ends. The gentleman who runs the shop does know where everything is, though, so if you are looking for something specific, you can ask him, and if he’s got something that suits, he’ll point you in the right direction. And from there, you rummage.)
It’s on one of the main thoroughfares in Royal Oak, Auckland, and it’s full to bursting with knick-knacks, old chairs and desks and sets of drawers, ornaments, old suitcases, lamps, vinyl, books …you name it, it’s probably in there somewhere. Except for knobs for dressers and desks, which is what I was looking for and couldn’t find any of.

It’s one of those stores where you have to be careful not to breathe too heavily, in fear of knocking something off its perch. But it was really neat, and I will definitely be heading back there, even if it’s simply to look around.
As you can see just from the photos, the range of items is immense, and because it’s a second-hand shop, the items are always changing. You’ll discover things in there on your first visit, and a whole new range of items the next time.
I will say, though, looking at some of my photos from my first trip there in 2014 and the images I took in 2026 … there are definitely some items that have not changed, and interestingly enough, still caught my eye!
The clock that was vintage nursery rhymes (photo below) was especially fun, and if I had a house to put such things in, then I would have snatched it up!

Where is Royal Oak Traders?
Royal Oak Traders is located at 717 Mount Albert Road, Royal Oak, Auckland 1023, New Zealand. There is plenty of street parking, as well as the mall across the road, where you can park.
It is a very busy part of the suburb, though, so be careful crossing the road (there is a pedestrian crossing right outside – be sure to use it!) and opening your car door if you’re parking on a main street.
When do they open?
The Royal Oak Traders are open Thursday and Friday 10am – 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4:30pm.
What do you think? Do you like shops like this? Or are they your worst nightmare?
Have you been to the Royal Oak Traders store?

Note: I first went to the Royal Oak Traders in 2014, and have since gone back a few times. This post was originally written in 2014, updated in 2016 and 2023, and then again in 2026. The latest time, and the time when these photos were taken, was in May 2026.
