The easiest way to utilise your one-link in bio for Instagram is by a link page.

Hands down the best way to get people to where you want them to be. Because let’s face it: Instagram is amazing and we love it, but we don’t want the people to stay there, right? Right.

As small business and blog owners, we want people to discover us on Instagram, yes, but where we really want them is here: on the blog. It’s over on Etsy checking out our shop. It’s in our Resource Libraries scoring themselves epic free content. That’s where we want them.

But Instagram only gives you one measly link opportunity in your bio. And that’s not enough to really let people what you have to offer. What we really need is a place where we can link to in our bios but lead people to another page where we showcase the ‘best of us’.

Enter: Third-Party Sites

Websites like LinkTree, Flowpage, and Lynx are all sites (and there are many more!) which offer exactly that: a ‘page’ where you can slot in all the links you want, which they then show in a button-list when people click that link.

I was using LinkTree for years because I thought this was such an epic idea. It didn’t matter how many times I wrote ‘link in bio’ on my Instagram posts, I never had to go and physically change the link. It was either a quick edit on the site, or, as the case often was, I had more generic links to it such as ‘Read the Latest Blog Post’.

But something always annoyed me about LinkTree.

It was free (yay!) but it was watermarked and very limited in style until you upgraded to the paid version (boo!). Granted, the paid option isn’t much, but when you’re working with ‘not much’ to begin with you don’t want to be paying money into things if you can help it.

It was only recently that I realised that actually, I could make my very own version of LinkTree myself, on my blog, with simple, no faff, buttons that acted in the exact same way LinkTree and all the other websites do, but was on.my.own.blog.

What.A.Revelation.

The benefits of creating your own Instagram links page

  • You can do it on your blog platform (WordPress, SquareSpace, Wix etc)
  • Traffic from Instagram comes straight to your blog rather than through a third-party
  • You don’t have yet another website to keep track of
  • You can customise your Links page and make it exactly how you want and that aligns with you and your brand
  • Never have to worry about watermarks!
  • Know that it’s not going to disappear if the third-party site suddenly up and leaves the internet.

How to create your own Instagram links page

It’s important to note a couple of things before I get into exactly how I made my own Link Page.

  1. I have a self-hosted WordPress Blog
  2. I use a free plugin called Page Builder but I’ve also used Elementor (also free!)

I haven’t researched how to make a Links Page like the one I’m about to show you on other platforms like SquareSpace, Blogger or Wix, but I’m sure it’s possible, even if you have to do some creative thinking.

Page Builder by SiteOrigin is a free plugin for building pages … surprise surprise. Not all the pages on This Splendid Shambles have been created with Page Builder, but the Resource Library has. And now my Links page. If you’re looking for an easy-to-use and budget-friendly (cough free cough) then it’s a great option!

Another option is Elementor, which is another free page building plugin. It’s a super easy, drop-and-drag plugin which allows you can create stunning pages.

But again, there will be plenty of other options and you may already have your own ways in mind.

Using Page Builder, here’s how I set up my page within WordPress (after creating a new page and calling it Links):

Whether you’re familiar with Page Builder or not, what I did was create just one Row, split evenly into three sections. I wanted to have everything central and ‘list like’ when viewed on mobile (it’s unlikely that many people will arrive on desktop and even if they do, it still looks good), so this was going to be the best option.

To imitate the link websites’ page style, I added an Image widget at the top with a circular image of myself, then a Text widget with my Instagram handle linked. After that come all the pretty buttons!

Site Origin also has a great Button widget that comes in the SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle (definitely recommend checking it out!) which I used for all the buttons. You can customise the buttons a bunch of different ways including changing the colour, the look, the icons etc. Right at the bottom, I put some social media links. This widget comes with my WordPress theme, but obviously, you can use this space how you’d like.

Here’s a comparison between what the Edit and the actual page looks like:

As the link is going to be clicked primarily on mobile, I was optimising the look with Mobile in mind, but as you can see, it looks pretty good on desktop/tablet too.

Over on Instagram, when people click my link in bio this is what they’re going to see, compared with the LinkTree version I had before, where I couldn’t change the colours or remove the watermark for free. Looks a lot more ‘me’, right?

While I’ve used these websites (which all look basically the same when you’ve put your links in) as an example for how you could layout your links page, you can change it up however you’d like, and that’s truly the beauty of creating your own Instagram links page. I might not keep mine like this; I might create a graphic that sits at the top instead. But whatever I do, I’ve done it for free and in a way that’s more usable than before.

I hope this has been helpful! Obviously, your set up might be very different to mine, but I hope that in me showing you what I’ve created it’s sparked a few ideas in your mind as to how to create an Instagram links page. Now go and create a beautiful page that is fully yours!
