Wondering about things to do after University?

Introducing my friend, Roz, who is going to be sharing about some things to do after university and what she’s getting up to.

We’ve known each other since we were 13 years old; we went all through high school together, and though we lived in different cities after that, we’ve been great friends ever since. She’s the friend, if you recall, who came over to England in the summer, and we went to Greece together, as well as Bristol, Cardiff, London and, of course, the Doctor Who Experience.

When I move back to New Zealand, we’re actually going to be in the same again, after about 5 years of being in different cities, and different hemispheres! Pretty darn excited about that! Today she’s here to tell you a little about life after Uni.

Inspiring activities to do after Uni ends

Just over a year ago (2013), I graduated with a degree in Performing Arts Management. Which is amazing, but then I thought, well, what now?

When I was extremely hungover 12 hours after my graduation party, I got thinking about the ‘NOW WHAT?’ idea. I had just spent the last few years of my life hiding in dark theatres and only going out at night times. Obviously, getting a job was on the list of things to do, but that wasn’t too pressing on my mind as I had some part-time work that could keep me going, and I could always go on a benefit for a few weeks like most people in the performing arts sector do at some point.

The thing that was getting to me the most was the fact that for the last four years, I had put all my hobbies and interests aside to focus on my education. Sure, I had a great time and I would not exchange my time as a student for anything, but it came to the point where I think I nearly forgot what I loved to do! It was after that revelation I decided to try new things, get out there more. I wanted to spend the next 12 months re-discovering all of the things!

Here are some of the things I’ve done after University, and hopefully they inspire you.

1. Get outside

I have been on a heap of outside adventures this year. I started exploring the New Zealand Department of Conservation walking tracks in my local area. I also started swimming again! I haven’t been swimming since I was a kid, I forgot how great the ocean is. I tried surfing, but I wasn’t very good at that! I re-learned how to ride a bike and started going for rides with my flatmates, I learned quickly that I wasn’t very good at going around corners. Now every weekend is filled with at least two fitness activities.

2. Travel

I was lucky enough this year to go overseas for 9 weeks. I went to visit Anjali in England and we went to Greece together; our trip to Greece was something we had been planning since we were 16 years old!

It was also on this trip I discovered heaps of my family; I have cousins and aunties all over England, which I grew up with when I lived there when I was young, but I haven’t seen them in 20 years! It was so cool to meet them all, and I learnt heaps about previous generations and where my family comes from.

3. Music

My main love has always been music. I cannot go a day without listening to music. I noticed that during my studies I was doing less research about bands and new music that was coming out and therefore I wasn’t listening to many new things! This year has been a great year for music! My favourite albums this year are Arctic Monkeys – AM, Jake Bugg – Shangri La, Lorde – Pure Heroine and Aaradhna – Treble & Reverb

4. Get into reading

I have never been good at reading! I have avoided it my entire life! But I decided to set myself reading goals! So far this year I have read 8 books; I am really proud of this because I have always been so afraid of books, and now I can understand why Anjali is so addicted to them!

I read a few of the Harry Potter series, I read all three of the Hunger Games in 8 days, and I read some music history books too!

5. Establishing Green Fingers

My parents have a great garden. They have loads of roses, a tennis court surrounded by creeping ivy, and a pond filled with pink lilies. This was the perfect place for me to start learning about plants and how to look after them. I took responsibility for a section in the garden and now I have a bunch of great plants established which I take pride in!

6. Cooking

I have always loved food. I talk about food all the time and I am always thinking about food. When I was living on a budget as a student there were heaps of limitations to the type of food I could afford and make. Now however I try and make a new dish every week! I try to make something that I haven’t made before so that I can start developing my skills in the kitchen!

So that’s some of the things I’ve been doing after University, and I hope to add more things to my days.

What are some of the things you’ll be doing after Uni has ended?
