Flatlay desk with notebook and coffee or tea in a mug. How to Pick a Name for Your Blog.

So you’ve made the decision to start a blog. Fantastic! But now you need to figure out how to pick a name for your blog. Which is, to be honest, probably the harder part.

Choosing a blog name can be a little scary, but I promise you that once you’ve got your list of topics that you’re going to write about, then it’s a bit easier. And I’ve figured out some ways that, hopefully, will give you some inspiration to get going.

Before you get started on your brainstorming, I want you to think about a couple of things first and write them down.

  • What am I going to be blogging about?
  • Who is my target audience?
  • What keywords might people use to search for the types of posts I’m going to share?

How to pick a name for your blog

Hopefully, you already know your niche for your blog, or what you’re going to be writing about. If you’re not sure yet, check out this blog post on using the Japanese concept of Ikigai for finding your blog niche. Or have a think about some of the things you love talking about a lot, are passionate about, and could write a lot of content about.

Once you know the broad topic you’ll be writing about (or semi-broad), then grab a piece of paper or open a document, and big and bold at the top, write it down.

Now jot down the following questions and have a think about what your answers would be. This is one of the ways you can figure out how to choose a blog name. Which may seem chaotic, but just trust the process.

We’ll do an example as we go; let’s say you want to start a blog about solo travel as a single woman. Here’s how you might go about brainstorming a name for your blog.

1. List all the aspects within your blog topic/s that you could write about

From our example, some topics might be:

  • safety
  • visa and passports
  • money
  • packing
  • travel essentials
  • technology
  • apps or software that will help
  • accommodation
  • finding flights
  • transport within different countries
  • road tripping
  • cruises
  • group tours as a single woman
  • eating out

2. Add some keywords or phrases that people might associate with your topic/s

From our example:

  • solo travel
  • solo travel for women
  • travelling alone as a woman
  • group tours as a single woman
  • travelling abroad
  • road tripping alone
  • detour
  • safe travel

3. Perhaps have a bit of a google and see what people are searching

From our example, I typed in a couple of starting words and here’s what the auto-fill gave me.

4. Also write down some facts and characteristics about yourself

I’ll need to make up a persona here but let’s say you’re …

  • 32
  • single
  • bubbly
  • bold
  • extrovert or at least likes meeting new people
  • vibrant in your dress style
  • pretty minimal when it comes to travel
  • working nomad

5. Head to Thesaurus.com to find synonyms for some of these words that you’ve written down

  • Bold: adventurous, audacious, courageous, daring, confident, intrepid
  • Bubbly: effervescent, lively, dynamic, sparkling
  • Vibrant: spirited, vivid, bright
  • Nomad: wander, wanderer, vagabond, roamer, wayfarer

6. With all the words you’ve written down, see if you can combine some of the words together in twos or threes

Here are some examples of what you could do with all the things we’ve talked about so far.

  • Wandering Solo
  • The Single Wayfarer
  • The Audacious Wanderer
  • Spirited She Wanders
  • The Bright Nomad
  • She Roams Free
  • A Daring Detour
  • One Woman Wanders
  • The Spirited Traveller

Hopefully, you can see the process of what we’ve just gone through. Of course, you may have a name for your blog that comes to mind straight away, but this exercise works well if you want to brainstorm and see what you can come up with.

Before choosing your blog name

Before you lock anything in, here are some additional things to think about.

  • What does the name look like as an acronym? I sometimes refer to This Splendid Shambles as TSS.
  • What does it look like as a domain name? Write it out as one word and make sure it doesn’t create any words that you don’t want it to. Make sure it’s clear.
  • How long is it? You don’t want it to be too long or difficult.
  • Double-check to make sure no one else online already has that name. If they do, keep playing until you discover another option.
  • And say it out loud a few times. For my own blog name, I really like it because of the points below (oxymoron), but actually? It’s a little tricky to say out loud. You can get a little tongue-tied around the s’s at the end of This and the start of Splendid. Go on, say it aloud. See what I mean? So I’d better take that into account next time.

Some additional ideas for how to pick a name for your blog

  • Use your own name or a variation of it
  • Create a play on words
  • Merge two words together (this is called a Portmanteau – e.g. Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch)
  • Use an idiom and make it your own
  • Use an oxymoron (contradictory terms) as I did. ‘Splendid’ is a good thing, while ‘shambles’ often has negative connotations. By using both, I’ve not only accurately described my life (haha!) but I’ve created a unique name.

It can be a big deal choosing a blog name, but hopefully these tips have you got you on the right path! I’d love to know if you used any of these techniques to name your blog. Drop it in the comments!
