Their love and their leadership have been tested. Now it's time for Perry and Aria to unite the Dwellers and the Outsiders in one last desperate attempt to bring balance to their world.

The race to the Still Blue has reached a stalemate. Aria and Perry are determined to find this last safe-haven from the Aether storms before Sable and Hess do-and they are just as determined to stay together.
Meanwhile, time is running out to rescue Cinder, who was abducted by Hess and Sable for his unique abilities. And when Roar returns to camp, he is so furious with Perry that he won't even look at him, and Perry begins to feel like they have already lost.

Out of options, Perry and Aria assemble a team to mount an impossible rescue mission - because Cinder isn't just the key to unlocking the Still Blue and their only hope for survival, he's also their friend. And in a dying world, the bonds between people are what matter most.

I read the first book in this series by Veronica Rossie, Under the Never Sky, in July 2013, and immediately bought both it and the second book, Through the Ever Night, because I loved it so much. I think I read both in the same week. I have only just read the last one, however, after buying it before we left England.

Often I find that sequels aren’t as good as the first book, but Through the Ever Night was just as good as Under the Never Sky, if not better. I was a little wary about reading the final instalment, as the last book and really ruin a series if you don’t enjoy it. Thank goodness it was brilliant.

What is Into the Still Blue about?

Into the Still Blue continues the story of Aria and Perry and their friends as they journey and battle to find the Still Blue, a place once thought to be a myth, a place that is protected from the Aether storms that ravage the skies and burn up both land and people.

Fighting against the clock, and also the bad guys, Aria and Perry get into all sorts of trouble as they try their hardest to put the pieces of the puzzle together so they can move the Tides – the tribe that Perry is the leader of – away from their caves and through the Aether barrier into paradise, freedom and ultimately their survival. That’s sort of the main gist of this final book, without giving too much away. I daren’t say any more though. Just in case.

“We all have the potential to do terrible things. But we also have the potential to overcome our mistakes.”

My thoughts on Into the Still Blue

I love Veronica Rossi’s writing. She seems to be able to captivate and draw you in with every sentence and every event, and I found myself reading this entire book in about 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon. Just like books 1 and 2, Into the Still Blue is written in third person, alternating perspectives between Aria and Perry. I love the characters in these stories. They are all so unique and…well individual. I often find that some characters in stories are very much there as background people, which is fine, but background people/minor characters have personalities too, and this is something that I think Rossi writes very well.

There are two things in particular that I really like about this series, other than the awesome and intense storyline.

Firstly, is that there’s no real love triangle. ‘What?’ you say. ‘How can it be a YA novel without a love triangle?’ To be honest, I don’t think that’s the rule, but most YA novels I’ve read have a love triangle of some kind. Not so in this series. Sure there’s the odd stray of the eye, the odd ‘what if’ thought, but nothing like say, Edward/Bella/Jacob, or Peeta/Katniss/Gale, or Maxon/America/Aspen … need I go on?

“We have to tell each other the little things, the bad things. Maybe they’ll hurt for a while, but at least they won’t become big things. If we don’t, we’re just going to keep hurting each other. And I don’t want to do that anymore.”

Secondly, the friendship between Aria and Roar. Roar is Perry’s best friend, and Perry is Aria’s love. But Roar becomes one of Aria’s best friends, and that’s all they are to each other the entire series. They are like two platonic peas in a pod. And I think that’s pretty darn awesome. I think there should be more friendships like theirs in novels.

This turned out to be longer than I thought. But if you like a good YA, dystopian story with goodies and baddies, bloodshed (but not too gruesomely), heartfelt speeches, a bit of romance, tears and laughter, then I really do recommend grabbing a copy of this series – yup, the entire series – either at the library or just buy it. I will be reading this series again, for sure!
