You may remember that I mentioned there was a beach near the Avocado orchard that we went to wee while ago. Well, today I thought I’d just show you guys some of the pictures from our little excursion to Ōtuataua Stonefields and beach!
We actually weren’t at the beach for very long; it was more a ‘hey let’s pop down there and take a look’ type of adventure. The main trip was for the avocados (which we have been eating nearly every day so they don’t go off…what a tough life), but we learnt a little about the Ōtuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve, and enjoyed taking photos around the area.

What are the Ōtuataua Stonefields?
There are only two major remnants of Auckland’s volcanic stonefields, and one is the Ōtuataua Stonefields site. The site is an important archaeological site, but also plays a role in education. You can read more about the reserve on the Auckland Council website.
Where is the Ōtuataua Stonefields?
The Ōtuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve are in Mangere, specifically: 56 Ihumatao Quarry Road, Māngere, Auckland 2022. It’s easy to get there from the city’s CBD: head towards Onehunga and jump on State Highway 20, and take the Mangere Exit (20a) towards the airport, then take Ihumatao Road. Take a left onto Oruarangi Road, then left on Ihumatao Quarry Road and the reserve is at the end of the road.

Walking around the reserve, down by the beach, and exploring the avocado farm was a really great afternoon out. If you’re in Auckland or you’re passing through, then it’s a great spot to check out.
Have you been here? What did you think?
