lets talk about out of sight out of mind

What is it about vision that makes us forget?

A friend used to say this to me a lot: ‘out of sight, out of mind’. And how true is that? How often do we say we’ll hang out with someone or we’ll get this job done or that something started, and yet get distracted from these things by life and all it brings?

I’m so conscious of this, especially when it comes to friends who live far away. I try to keep in touch as much as possible, even if it’s just sending them a message or flicking a text their way.

I don’t want to be an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ person.

I want to be that person who thinks about the people she doesn’t see, who remembers that they’re out there in the world doing amazing things, and even though I can’t see it, or them, that they are a wonder, and they are doing their best.

I don’t want to be the person who moves to a different city, only to never talk to those left behind.

I want to be intentional, I want to be encouraging from afar.

I want to be an ‘out of sight, but still on my mind‘ kind of person.

The hardest part, I find, is even if I’m doing my best, not everybody else can, or perhaps does. I may be sending messages and happy thoughts their way, but life is busy, and I know that sometimes it doesn’t go both ways. I think I’m coming to learn that that’s okay.

I’ve talked about one-way friendships before, and I think that being ‘out of sight, out of mind’ is a big contributing factor to that. While it’s hard, and sad, I think it’s still important to remember those you no longer see, for they were a part of your life at some stage, and even if it were only for a short amount of time, that time was enough to have an impact on your life.

Perhaps today, in the midst of your chaos and life, intentionally stop and take a moment. Send a message to someone who you miss, or you haven’t seen in a long time. Just say hey. Or let them know you’re thinking of them, hoping they’re having a good day. Little things like that can make a big difference.

Be intentional. Be an ‘out of sight, but still on my mind’ kind of person.

How often is ‘out of sight, out of mind’ true for you?
