“What are men to rocks and mountains?” – Jane Austen

Mount Taranaki never ceases to amaze.

Last month a group of us road tripped down to New Plymouth, in Taranaki, New Zealand again (you may have seen my story on Instagram). It was just a short trip, 2 nights in fact, but we were heading down to support a friend who was being ordained.

I also love visiting New Plymouth, and the surrounding Taranaki area. This time we skirted around the north side of the mountain (also called Mount Egmont) and took the road south from there to get to the marae where we going, and while the Eltham cheese store was shut on the weekend, we stopped in a Stratford (not quite as grad as ‘read’ Stratford-Upon-Avon in England, but it’ll do) for a bite to eat.

The afternoon was spent on the marae, and as we were leaving there was this spectacular view of the mountain silhouetted against the setting sun.

This is where I live, friends. What a blessing it is to live in this stunning country.

I feel like New Plymouth and Taranaki as a region don’t really get enough praise in New Zealand. But it’s just a lovely area, the city is great and compact, with a focus on the beautiful board walk along the shore ling, and even a hidden zoo at the top of a gorgeous park. I really do love visiting Taranaki, and now that my friend lives there, there might be more trips in the future!

Have you been to New Plymouth or the Tarankai region?
