Overlaying Photographs :: Photography

I’m always on the lookout for interesting photography techniques or edits, and overlaying photographs is something that I got really excited about. It’s really easy to do, and it does create a very different picture than what we are generally used to. Most photo editing programmes will have a function that will allow you do place one photo on top of another, overlaying photographs, being able to change the opacity, and have a combination of the two photos.

In Photoshop Elements, you can add another layer, and change the opacity and contrast. Or you can simply have two layers, choose the top layer and then change it from ‘normal’ to ‘overlay’.

In other programmes, the idea will be very similar. Photoscape is a great free photo editing programme that allows you to place another photo on top of the one you’re working on, and, again, change the opacity so the back image shows through.

I really love the look of images that have several pictures combined like this. And it’s a lot of fun to play around with. If you change the contrast, or colour, or temperature of one image, you can create really interesting photographs. Have a go, and see what you think. Do let me know if you try this!
