The gardens in Hamilton, New Zealand, are a joy to explore.

‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’, says Shakespeare. I would take it further, dear William, and say that a Garden by any other name would smell as sweet. At least the Hamilton Gardens would.

On the main highway that travels around the New Zealand city of Hamilton lies the most fantastically beautiful botanical garden. ‘What’s so special about this garden?’ I hear you say. Well, let me tell you. As you wander around its well-organised grounds, you will be transported away from Hamilton to far off lands beyond the horizon. I’m nearly being literal.

You might find yourself in the neatly-raked gardens of Japan, or stand in awe at the colours in India. You may stop and smell the orange trees in Italy, or take a stroll through the modern garden.

Along with the amazing country-based gardens, there’s a herb garden, where you can smell the aromas before being reaching it. There’s also a vegetable garden, and various sculptures you can view along the way.

It started out as an old rubbish dump back in the 60s, and now, over 40 years later, it is a thieving garden full of visitors every day. There are some amazing historical images on their website, and it really shows just how far they’ve come.

Throughout the year the gardens are also host to several events, including the stunning Hamilton Gardens Tulip Festival. And you don’t just have to visit in the summer. No matter what time of the year you visit the gardens, they’re still beautiful. In fact, one of my favourite visits to the Hamilton Gardens was in autumn. It was beautiful.

What I love about the gardens (other than the beautiful flowers and features), is that they have such a great sustainability plan, and they’re extremely environmentally conscious. They’re big on recycling, they buy local products both for the gardens and for the café, and much more. You can read their full list here.

If you haven’t been to the gardens, I highly suggest it. Even it means going slightly out of your way as your drive past, do it.

FAQs about the gardens in Hamilton

What are the Hamilton Gardens?

The Hamilton Gardens are a sprawling series of gardens in New Zealand’s Waikato. Tucked away into their own separate sections lie beautiful gardens from different countries around the world. There are so many cool spots worth checking out!

Where are the Hamilton Gardens?

The Hamilton Gardens can be found on Hungerford Crescent, which is off State Highway 1, just south of Hamilton’s centre. It’s in a great location for stopping in on a road trip, or to make a special trip from surrounding areas.

How much does Hamilton Gardens cost?

It’s currently free to visit the gardens! But as of January 2023, non-Hamilton residents will pay $10 to explore. Which is still a steal of a price for all the amazing spots in the garden. (See above!)

How long do you need at the Hamilton Gardens?

I recommended at least 2 hours to fully explore the wonders of the gardens. There are also other great spots in the park to check out, but I’d carve out a good chunk of time to visit the themed gardens themselves.
