As I sat down at my computer today, I was constantly aware of the ever-changing weather patterns that is an Auckland winter. Here, the winter in Auckland doesn’t get too cold but, it does rain. A lot. But it rains on and off.

As I write this paragraph, it’s been sunny, pouring with rain, and now it’s dry but windy. True story, I kid you not.

I was also thinking today how much of a roll I’ve been on lately when it comes to the blog. It’s like my head has been bursting with ideas and I can’t wait to get them down and scheduled, ready for the coming weeks.

But there are times when I literally sit in from the computer, fingers posed over the key board and…nothing. Not even a single sentence. It’s like my mind has dried up and it’s all shrivelled. Occasionally, I have just the right amount of ideas and posts, and normally one post a day is a happening thing, and it’s smooth sailing.

And as the rain lashes down and is quickly replaced by sun, I realised what Auckland winter has taught me about blogging.

Windy weather

Those moments throughout the month/year when you have so many ideas, you not only have the next week planned out, but you have posts scheduled for literally months in advance. It’s like your idea file in your head is bursting full, and it bursts, sending files everywhere and the wind gets them and spreads them far and wide, and you struggle to get a hold of both them and yourself.

Rainy weather

(Just ignore the fact that I love rain for a moment…humour me.)

The grey, drizzly, rainy weather is the time when nothing is happening. You can’t even pull a Pinterest-related post out because you are just in a rut. The weather/blog-idea land is getting you down, and you would rather just curl up in your duvet and go to sleep, and listen to the rain/read everyone else’s blogs.

And that’s totally fine. Sometimes it’s like that.

Sunny weather

Life is good! Blogging is fantastic! You have a new idea each day, and it’s constant smooth sailing, with happy butterflies and sunflower-filled posts that are pretty, quirky, funny and informative all at once. Sunny days are good days; sunny blog days are even better.

But you know what? I’ve found that these three stages are ever changing, rotating around, in no particular order, much like the Auckland winter weather. That’s life, though: never the same, always changing. If you’re in a blogging rut at the moment, never fear! Get out your umbrella, skip a little, and wait for the sunshine. It’s a’coming!

I realise that this analogy only goes so far, but that’s what Auckland winter has taught me about blogging. In all its changing glory. And in case you’re wondering…it’s now bright sunshine and there’s not a cloud in sight.
