The peculiar book tag

It’s about time I did The Peculiar Book Tag.

Jesse the Reader created this tag a year or so back now, and it’s really neat (you can check out his video here). He loves this series, and while I still haven’t finished it, I thought I could still have a go at picking books for this tag. It comes at a perfect time really, as we just recently read Tales of the Peculiar for Blogger’s Bookshelf Book Club. You can read all about the book and what we thought of it here.

I struggled with a few of these prompts, but here’s what I came up with.

The Peculiar Book Tag

1. Abandoned house- A book that you once abandoned but then gave another chance and ended up enjoying

The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss

I don’t remember why I abandoned this one. I think I didn’t get passed the first chapter, but got distracted by another book and never came back to it. I remember also thinking it was a bit odd, but when I finally did pick it up I absolutely loved it. It was an amazing novel and I’m so glad I gave it another shot. Read my review of The Name of the Wind.

2. Vintage photographs- A book you would have loved to see illustrations in

Strange the Dreamer, by Laini Taylor

Not only do I love this book to bits, but I think it would an excellent book to illustrate. The world that Taylor has created for this story is amazing, and I can definitely image beautiful pictures throughout it. Please someone make this happen! Read my review of Strange the Dreamer.

3. Loop- A series that you wouldn’t mind reading on loop

Either Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, or the entire Shadowhunters collection by Cassandra Clare

Harry Potter for obvious reasons I feel like I don’t need to get into here. But then also Shadowhunters books. And I’m talking all of them: The Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices, Dark Artifices, the series that aren’t even out yet, and the sub-books too. Read them all. Just loop it up.

4. Peculiar Children- A character’s ability that you desire to have for yourself

Just one? No chance. Hermione’s genius in Harry Potter, Violet’s ability to invent things from basically nothing in A Series of Unfortunate Events, Magnus’ (or Tessa’s) Warlock abilities in the Shadowhunter books, the list goes on.

5. Miss Peregrine- Your favourite character that is a leader

Professor McGonagal. Perhaps a little like Miss Peregrine in a way, but I love McGonagal. She’s all authority, with a touch of sass and a whole lotta witchy-greatness.

6. Jacob- Your favourite story where a regular kid discovers an extraordinary world

Does Harry Potter count? I actually think maybe not. Harry is no ordinary kid, even when he doesn’t know he’s a what? ‘A wizard, Harry!’ Harry aside, I love Quentin Coldwater’s trip to Fillory via the magical school of Brakebills in The Magicians, and also Lucy Pevensie wandering through the wardrobe in Narnia.

7. Emma- A fierce and fiery character

Lila from A Darker Shade of Magic, by V.E. Schwab

I love this series a lot, and all the characters are so brilliant. Lila is one of the greatest, and she is incredibly fierce and firey. Read my reviews here: A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light.

8. Millard- A book that seems to be invisible but needs to be read by more people

Carnival of Souls, by Melissa Meyer

I just really joyed this book, but no one I know on Goodreads has read it, and none of my friends have heard of it. It may be due to the fact that it has two names (it was originally published under Carnival of Souls, but was changed to Carnival of Secrets, and sometimes called Untamed City), or the fact that there doesn’t look like a sequel is happening any time in the near (or distant) future. But I really enjoyed this story. It’s a shame, really, that not many people have heard of it.

9. Olive- A book you bought that floated to the top of your TBR

As in it went straight to the top really fast, or it took a long time but eventually got there? I’m going to go with the former, because Olive tends to float at a decent pace.

The Hazel Wood, by Melissa Albert

I bought this just this past month, and it’s gone straight to the top of my TBR list. While I had just started reading the second Falling Kingdoms book, Rebel Spring, I read The Hazel Wood straight after I shut the pages. Did it live up to the hype I’d seen so many places? Not quite. Book review coming soon!

10. Hugh- A book that stung and caused a lot of feelings

The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, and Holding Up The Universe, by Jennifer Niven.

These books! My goodness, so many emotions. *sniff* So beautiful.

11. Enoch- Without spoiling, a book character that you would bring back to life

Sirius Black.

Without a doubt. Bring Sirius back. I think out of all the deaths in Harry Potter, this was the hardest for me. I don’t remember if I thought it would happen, I just remember balling my eyes out when I read that chapter. Sniff. I know that the rest of the series would have been rather different, but just give Harry a break! And also Lupin and Sirius were back together as friends again, and sniff, it was beautiful and the wham. Dead.

12. Bronwyn- A physically strong character

Chaol from Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas

This was a difficult one! At first I couldn’t think of any, and then I could think of too many. I went with Chaol from the Throne of Glass series, and then realised that Celaena Sardothien herself is pretty physically strong too. So either or. Read my review of Throne of Glass.

13. Hollowgasts- A book you read that felt like an experiment gone wrong

Legacy of Kings, by Eleanor Herman

I loved the sound of this book (a young Alexander the Great!? Yes please!), and yet it did not live up to my expectations. I feel like there was so much more that could have been added, different aspects that could have been looked into. I think the idea was fantastic, and I was definitely up for reading a story about a younger version of a great leader I read so much about in high school and university … and yet… ? Yeah, nah, sorry Eleanor. Not for me. Read my full review of Legacy of Kings.

14. Whites- A book that felt like it consumed tropes that you’ve seen done in other books

Falling Kingdoms, by Morgan Rhodes

While I enjoyed this book and consequently borrowed books 2 – 5 from the library shortly after finishing Falling Kingdoms, it dd have many tropes: multiple countries that don’t get along/are at war, a forbidden love, a Princess who isn’t expected to do anything, a character out for revenge, corrupt kings…the list goes on. Review coming soon.

So there we have it. I really enjoyed putting together this book tag, and I think Jesse did an excellent job with the categories and how they relate to the Peculiar series. With this finished, I must pick up Hollow City this year.

What would be your answers to some of these questions?

If you’ve done this book tag (either in blog post or YouTube), do let me know and leave a link so I can come and check out your answers!
