To have a successful blog, one of the things you need to be is consistent.

No one wants to find a great blog to read and then have to wait 3 months for another post. They’re going to get sick of waiting or forget about you. How are you going to showcase what you got, how you can help people, or inspire or teach them if you only post a few times a year?

Spoiler alert: you’re not.

Likewise, Google doesn’t want to find your blog and start showing your content to people searching for your keywords and then not be able to give anyone new content for months on been. Google, as well as people, need to see that your blog, your website, are being updated consistently.

But!

Being consistent doesn’t have to be difficult. With a few tips up your sleeve and a few strategies to stay consistent in blogging, you’ll find you’re motivated to keep going.

How to be consistent in blogging

  1. Write everything down
  2. Brainstorm new ideas often
  3. Set a reasonable blogging goal
  4. Batch your content
  5. Have a plan
  6. Set aside time each week to blog
  7. Schedule your posts
  8. Done is better than perfect

Write everything down

Even if it’s 11pm at night, you’ve just shut your eyes and you get an idea. Get up, grab your phone or your notebook and write.it.down. I’m serious. Even if you don’t even use it, even if it’s a ‘bad idea’, write it down.

Take a look at it later on and see what you make of it. It may have been a bit random; it may have nothing to do with what you usually write about, but it may be golden. And it’s those ideas and notes that you want to keep. Don’t let them get lost into the bloid.

Brainstorm new ideas often

Spend 30 minutes every week (or set yourself a time during the fortnight or month), and just brain dump. Pick a topic and write out questions, comments, thoughts, one-word ideas. Then form those ideas into topics that you could write about.

Brain dumping and then rearranging into something a little more cohesive and that resembles a brainstorm is going to be so beneficial and is going to help you come up with a ton of new ideas, which you can get to writing.

Set a reasonable blogging goal

If you’re starting out, then chances are you’re still finding your feet. And that’s completely normal and expected. But to be consistent, you really need to set yourself a reasonable blogging goal.

Tell yourself you’re going to write, for example, one blog post per week. That’s it. Just one per week. That’s your blogging goal, and you’re going to stick to it. You’ll find if you have a reasonable goal to work towards and to achieve, then you’re going to be more consistent with your blogging, as it’s totally doable.

When you’re ready, you can bump it up or adjust it. But start with something small and achievable.

Batch your content

I cannot stress the wonder and value of batching enough when creating your content. Sit down with your ideas and write all your posts. Then create all the images and graphics for your posts. Then do your Pinterest Pins. Schedule your posts.

If you can do things in batches, you’ll save a lot of time and mental energy that you would have used up jumping between different types of tasks.

Have a plan

Those brainstormed ideas? Put them into a plan. Whether your plan looks like a schedule in your planner, or it’s a Google Docs spreadsheet or an Airtable layout. Whatever way you find the easiest and the most efficient, create a blog plan so you can stay on top of what you’re going to be posting, when, and on what social media channels you’ll publish on.

Set aside time each week to blog

Have a busy life schedule? I get it. But to have a blog means you’ve got to spend time on it. And while finding time is tricky, it’s definitely doable. Even if you only have an hour on Saturday morning, that’s your blog time.

Write it in your diary, schedule it on your phone. The more proactive you are about setting aside time, the better.

Schedule your posts

The last thing you want is to be frantically writing and posting on the go. By batching and setting aside time, you’ll be able to write content for the weeks ahead. Then you can schedule your blog posts and social media to go alongside it; this allows the post to be published without you having to manually click ‘publish’.

Time and energy saver!

Done is better than perfect

At the end of the day, done and posted is better than perfect. Don’t scrutinise your wording. It doesn’t have to be perfect. If you spot a spelling error a week later, it’s all good! Just go back in and fix it up.

BONUS – get a community

When I was first starting back in 2009, I knew very few people who had a blog. But I wrote, and I created, and a few years later I was sitting with friends in a room where we all worked on our blogging content together.

And suddenly, I was so much more motivated to blog and to be consistent. Why? I had that accountability and support around me.

I had friends who would pipe up and say ‘hey, how’s the blog post on XYZ coming along?’ or ‘I really liked what you said about the price of fish/how sliced bread was invented/why the manatee is the most underrated aquatic animal’.

Their support kept me in check and gave me the boost I needed week after week to get to work and create content for the blog. They kept me accountable and motivated.

If you don’t have a blogging buddy or a writing squad, I highly recommend finding some of your people! Or join The Blogging Room, where we do just that: support and encourage each other, and keep one another accountable.
