I actually think both summer and winter are similar when it comes to getting blog things done.

In the winter, you don’t wanna go out. You wanna be cosy and warm at home, maybe on the couch with a hot chocolate, writing blog posts or having uninterrupted time on your blog.

In the summer, if you have holidays, then you have some more time to get those things done. Yes, you might be out more enjoying the sunshine, but the days are longer, the energy is high, and you have some more time to sit down (on the porch with a summery drink 🍸) to write.

So while, at the publication of this blog post, we’re in winter in New Zealand, the northern hemisphere is sweating its way into summer. No matter if you’re in the heat or the cold at the moment, here are some of the things to do this summer for your blog.

Planning for the next season

If you find yourself with some time this summer (or winter!) then planning for the next upcoming season/s is a really good idea. Think about the next season – autumn or spring – and the blog posts that you could write in your niche that people might be look for.

You could also think about things like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years … it’s good to think about 3 months ahead of the world, so that your content is out there and ready for them when they go to search for it.

Getting blog posts written and scheduled

Get those words out of your brain and onto paper. Or Google Sheets. Or straight into your blogging platform.

Getting your blog posts written and scheduled ahead of time is going to mean that you can step back a little bit if you want to (or need to), over this current season. If you have a good blog planner then this is going to be super easy for you to plan, write, and schedule ahead.

Spending time doing some backend stuff

The backlog of tasks I get throughout the year for my own blog can get pretty, well, backed up. Things like SEO updates, updating plugins or making sure they’re ones I want to keep, and even doing things like I’ve already mentioned … they’re all things that get pushed back sometimes when we’re just focusing on writing new blog posts.

Looking at some of those backend tasks is a really good thing to do this summer for your blog. Use the time as a bit of a clean-up opportunity.

Fixing broken links

Speaking of things to do in the backend … when I tell you that over 2000 blog posts means I have a lot of broken links … oof. Broken Links aren’t great. They frustrate your readers when they think they can go somewhere and get a 404 error page. It’s bad for SEO, it means you’re missing out on internal linking opportunities, and it can lower your credibility as a blogger.

Which means checking your blog for broken links on a regular basis is a really good practice. I’ve been using Link Whisper to do this, and it’s been brilliant.

Updating some older blog posts

While you’re looking for and fixing your broken links, you might as well spend some time this summer updating older blog posts.

Take a look at your most popular blog posts and double-check that they are up to date. Perhaps you can add some more context, or there have been updates in your industry or niche that you can add to the post about, or maybe it’s just a case of updating those broken links and popping in some fresh images.

You might have a lot of blog posts like I do, and the ones you wrote years ago could definitely do with an update. Think about what people might be searching for to find your blog posts (better yet, check out your analytics!), and then make sure that your blog posts are covering what they think they’re getting when they land on your blog.

Breathing. Taking a break.

One of the best things you can do this summer for your blog? Take a break.

If you’ve got your months scheduled ahead, then even better. But just remember that you are more important than your blog. And if you need to take a break, then you take a break. It’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready to get up and at ’em again.

What kinds of things are you planning to do for your blog this season? Regardless of whether you’re 😎 or 🥶
