Ah the end of the year. Full of parties and boats.

Okay, so perhaps not all the time, but my end-of-year-festivities this year included a boat party.

And, friends, it was amazing.

I have never in my life been to a boat party, but was super keen when the idea was put to a large group of us. While the beach doesn’t really do it for me, I love the ocean, and being on the water. And what better way to spend a Saturday night than on the waves with 129 of your friends and their friends.

The evening started early at a friend’s place, while we did the girly thing and got ready together (something which I actually dislike – perhaps that’s a topic for another post), and we ate nibbles and made cocktails. Then we Ubered to the Viaduct Marina here in Auckland, where a gaggle of stripey-glad people awaited the all important ‘all aboard!’ declaration. It never really came, but we did pile on, grabbing our free drink token as we went.

We spent the next 4 hours on the boat, having bubbly and eating nibbles, dancing the night  away. The route the boat took was out of the Marina, West under the Auckland Harbour Bridge where we watched the sunset. The day had been miserable and wet, but right on sail time it cleared up and only started to drizzle again when we were docking at the end of the night.

From sunset-watching, we headed East, back through the Waitematā Harbour and up through the gap between Rangitoto Island, and the Takapuna area. We were docking back in the Marina at 11pm after an incredibly fun evening.

The entire time we were on the boat, I was torn between wanting to sing ‘I’m on a boat’ and the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. Struggle; it’s real.

If you ever get the chance to go on a boat like this, do it. It was so much fun, and it was just such an enjoyable way to spend the night with friends before we all head our separate ways for the Christmas and summer break.

Have you been on a boat trip/party like this? Where did you go?
