Did you know there’s a difference between a personal blog and a business blog? Chances are you’re one or the other (though you may be a little of both, and we’ll get to that in a moment!), but there’s a big difference between the two and it’s important to recognise those differences if you’re going to have a successful blog.

There are lots of things that make up a blog, but the reasons why we have our blog is a huge part of what makes it … well, our blog. Am I writing for fun or for my family to read what I’m getting up to? Am I writing to in order to help me make a living and support said family? Am I tacking it onto a big business to help me bring in traffic? Am I using it as a creative outlet in which to share my thoughts and feelings and writing skills?

Whatever it is, there are things you need to think about when it comes to your blog.

In this blog post, we’re going to take a look at the differences between personal blogs and business blogs, why they’re different, what sets them apart from one another, and I’ll share a few examples of personal blogs and business blogs.

What’s the difference between a personal blog and a business blog?

What is a personal blog?

A personal blog is one that is not associated with a business. It’s a blog that perhaps you started as a bit of a hobby, perhaps, like me, one of the main reasons was because you wanted to keep distant family members and friends up to speed with what you were doing and social media wasn’t really enough at the time. Perhaps you love to write and wanted to share your stories and poems and creativity on an online platform.

Whatever your reason, a personal blog is more based on sharing within a niche that you love. Perhaps you share your book reviews of your recent reads, or you have a DIY blog where you share tutorials of the crafts and repurposing projects you do. Or maybe you’re a travel blog!

Here’s the thing though: Just because you have a personal blog doesn’t mean you can’t make money from it. And there are lots of ways that you can monetise your blog … But that doesn’t make it a business blog or a ‘blog for your business’. We’ll get to that in a moment.

5 examples of personal blogs

  • This Splendid Shambles: Yup! This is a personal blog. I share posts related to the things I’m doing (reading, travelling, helping others with their blogs), but I always make sure I include tips or encouragement to others.
  • A Beautiful Mess: Elise and Emma may run a business now and blogging is their whole jam, but they share tutorials and tips, recipes, and lifestyle posts. They didn’t have a business first and then create a blog. Their blog became their business.
  • The Dainty Squid: I love Kayla’s blog. It’s a combination of the amazing places she discovers in her travels, what she finds at thrift stores, gardening, books … and she and her husband bought an old house and are doing it up. It’s their journey in restoration too.
  • Anita Hendrieka: Anita’s blog is all about travel, specifically in Albania. It’s full of amazing travel tips as well as things to do in Albania, places to visit, things to eat, places to stay … Brilliant!
  • Jenna Kutcher: Jenna is on of the OG bloggers from back in the day, and she has built up her personal blog to also be her business. But it’s another good example of how you can take your personal blog and turn it into something grand and great.

What is a business blog?

A business blog sits alongside a business and is used as a way to bring in new customers. Here are a few examples:

  • A business focussed on coaching women, for example, might have a blog that looked at things such as the pain points they help to solve, or posts where they give tips for things related to coaching.
  • A garden centre might have a blog where they share posts like ‘what to plant this season’ and ‘how to know if you’re killing your plants’.
  • A software company might write blog posts about why having really good computer programmes is going to save you a ton of energy and time and money in the future.

Whatever the niche or the business is, a business blog and the posts that sit within it have the purpose of bringing in potential customers, giving them some solutions to their problems, and making a sale.

Here’s the thing though: Just because you have a business blog doesn’t mean you’re automatically going to make money from it. Sometimes it’s just as much about brand awareness as it is about making a sale. You want to draw people into your website, where you can hopefully offer them your service or product, and one way to do that is by having a blog.

3 examples of business blogs

  • Neil Patel’s Blog: Neil Patel runs Ubersuggest, which is a keyword tool (which is great, by the way). But he also has a blog for his business. You’ll notice that this is a LOT of great content on his blog, but it’s also connected to his business. He draws people into his website with his blog content, and then they can also see what he has on offer.
  • Three Groves Marketing: I actually discovered Rebecca’s blog and website recently, but this is a good example of an online business – Three Groves Marketing – and how she’s also got a blog alongside her business website. The idea here is to help her readers by giving great posts, that also lead people to her services and how she can help them further.
  • HubSpot: HubSpot is a CRM tool and platform, offering a bunch of different services for business owners. But they also have a blog which is full of great tips and marketing strategies, case studies, trends, and more.

Whether you have a personal blog or you have a blog for your business, there is so much potential there for growing your traffic and making an impact.
