“These violent delights have violent ends.” – Romeo and Juliet
The Pop-Up Globe strikes again with a superb rendition of Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet. This is the Pop-Up Globe’s last year in Auckland before it hits the road and begins new exciting ventures overseas, so this is the last Shakespeare show at the Globe I’ll be going to for a while. I was hesitant to book tickets to Romeo and Juliet because I’d much prefer seeing shows that I don’t know as well, and I didn’t really want it to be my last Pop-Up Globe show because it’s not a favourite of mine. Obviously, I was silly in thinking that because it was a stunningly performed show and every second was highly enjoyable.

What I love about the Pop-Up Globe’s versions of these famous plays is their take on it. So much of the first half of the play was played out in fruit costumes, as they party that Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio head to (where Romeo meets Juliet for the first time) is a costume party and everyone is dressed as a fruit or in tropical attire. Romeo was a banana, in case anyone was wondering.

The acting for these plays is also incredible, and I’m in constant awe at Shakespearean actors who can not only remember all those old English lines but give them in a way that’s understandable and humorous at the same time. Darcy Kent (Romeo) and Tom Wingfield (Benvolio) were superb, as was Rutene Spooner who placed Mercutio, and Jess Hong who was Juliet.
“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
Did you manage to see Romeo and Juliet at the Pop-Up Globe?
