Queen’s We Will Rock You was, indeed, rockin’
Last Saturday we headed off to the North Shore to the Bruce Mason Centre to watch this West End musical, and it was pretty epic.
“New Zealand ’s very own Annie Crummer returns to the role of the Killer Queen, the tyrannical boss of the all-powerful global company that has robbed the world of rock music. Scaramouche and Galileo, two young outsiders, cannot come to terms with this bleak conformist reality created by the Killer Queen. They join the Bohemians, a handful of rock rebels, and embark on the search to find the unlimited power of freedom, love and rock music!” – Auckland Live
It was just as ridiculous as it sounds, but it was so much fun and the cast, musicians and crew did an incredible job. I had never seen the show before, and I wasn’t really sure what it was about other than it was beginning-to-end Queen songs (24 of them apparently!). It was really fun going to a show where I didn’t know the story at all; it’s not something I usually do. Most of the shows I attend in Auckland I’ve either seen before (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Phantom of the Opera, Cats), or have seen a movie version (Sweeny Todd, Matilda). Sitting down to a show where I only know the music but literally no part of the story was a really interesting experience, but so so so enjoyable!
If you’re a Queen fan, or you just love a slightly ridiculous show with a range of choreography styles, superb music, great acting and a whole lot of rock n roll, then this is lot of fun to head to if it’s coming to anywhere near you!
Have you seen We Will Rock You?
