We Saw Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat In Auckland

I was only 8 years old when I first discovered Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

My parents had the Donny Osmond version movie soundtrack and I knew all the songs and had seen the film version before I was even wrapped in a sheet, a tea towel on my head and was part of the musical in primary school. The majority of life I have sung Joseph songs, and belted out Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musicals from every possible place.

When it was announced that Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat was coming to the Civic in Auckland, my friends and I knew we had to go. It was a given. A must, not a maybe, or a ‘I’ll see if I can afford it’. And so we went.

This was actually the second time I’d seen Joseph as a production in a year , the other being my sister’s school musical. Needless to say, while the school did a great job, the international cast of the Civic performance were so outstanding I would go again.

This production was ‘remastered for a new generation’ and I really did enjoy the spin they put on things. While there were some new things that they added in, it definitely added to the whole show, rather than subtracting anything. I think the comedy aspect was somehow tugged out of it too, as I found myself laughing a lot more in this than I perhaps would at other Joseph shows.

The acting and singing was superb, but big shout-outs to Earl Gregory who played Joseph. His haunting performance of Close Every Door was incredibly moving. Jonathon Roxmouth was Pharaoh and while Pharaoh is always the best character in the show, Roxmouth brought even more awesome to the role, if that’s even possible.

If you get the chance to see it in Auckland or in Wellington, then I highly recommend it. Such a fun night out, and such a wonderful performance.
