After a bloody siege, Auranos has been defeated, its young queen orphaned and dethroned. The three kingdoms—Auranos, Limeros, and Paelsia—are now unwillingly united as one country called Mytica. But the allure of ancient, dangerous magic beckons still, and with it the chance to rule not just Mytica, but the whole world over...

At the heart of the fray are four brave young people grappling for that magic and the power it promises. For Cleo, the magic would enable her to reclaim her royal seat. In Jonas's hands, it frees his nation, and in Lucia's, it fulfills the ancient prophecy of her destiny. And if the magic were Magnus's, he would finally prove his worth in the eyes of his cruel and scheming father, King Gaius, who rules Mytica with a punishing hand.

When Gaius begins to build a road into the Forbidden Mountains to physically link all of Mytica, he sparks a long-smoking fire in the hearts of the people that will forever change the face of this land. For Gaius's road is paved with blood, and its construction will have cosmic consequences.

What is Rebel Spring by Morgan Rhodes about?

Rebel Spring picks up right where it left off in Falling Kingdoms. Cleo is now a prisoner in her own home in Auranos, having lost her family to the evil King Gaius and his people from the northern country of Limeros. Magnus is progressively becoming more and more like his father, Gaius, despite his mother telling him otherwise. Lucia is trying to control her magic. Jonas is now rallying a band of rebels together in order to take King Gaius down and get their central country home of Paelsia back.

Auranos has been conquered, and as the three countries stand on the verge of war, these four young people have to decide whose side they’re on, what they are willing to do to accomplish their (insane) plans, and who to trust and form alliances with.

As King Gaius begins to build a road connecting the three kingdoms of Mytica, the search for the magical elementia crystals becomes more and more urgent, with the immortal Watchers in the Sanctuary beginning to interfere with the lives of the mortals below.

My Thoughts on Rebel Spring

I’m actually really enjoying this series, she says only on book two. There are four more books to go, but I have this odd sort of need to read them all. They’re not absolutely fantastic, and there are a whole bunch of things that I’m iffy about – the number of times it takes for young people to fall in love, for one – but somehow I really wanted to pick up Rebel Spring when I finished Falling Kingdoms.

I don’t know why, but perhaps it’s a good plot and one that I’m totally getting behind. It’s definitely not because I love one of the characters and want them to be the winners in all of this, as I still don’t know whose side I’m on. Actually, thinking about it, I’m on Nic’s side, and Nic is one of Cleo’s friends, but is only a few chapters of the entire book. I want him to win. Please don’t die, Nic.

Speaking of dying, if you’re going to be picking up this series, don’t get attached to anyone. Rhodes will rip your heart out otherwise – there are so many deaths in this series and I’m only up to book two (Game of Thrones-esque in that sense)! But other than those sad moments (and totally out of the blue, most of them!), it was an enjoyable second book, and I look forward to continuing the story. My only fear is that I will end up enjoying the whole series a little too much and I’ll come to the end of the latest release and have to spend a day at whole recuperating.

Have you read the Falling Kingdoms series? Rebel Spring? What did you think?
