The biggest book haul of the year.

Not in terms of how many books are featured in this post, but in terms of me buying them … I bought all of these at the same time (okay, minus one). Due to bookish Instagram friends, I discovered two things this year: 1) Book Outlet, which sells books for super cheap (I’m talking a couple of dollars), and 2) having an NZ post YouShop account means I pay about half the international shipping on items from the US and the UK because I essentially have an overseas postal address. So I can buy things in the States, for example, but if shipping is astronomical to New Zealand, I can plug in my US address, pay US shipping (which is often free!), and then I pay way less for NZ Post to ship it from the address in the US to me here in NZ. Make sense?

So with all that in mind I kinda of went mad on Book Outlet (whose books are cheap but the shipping is crazy), and ordered nine books at once. Oops. But! In my defence, I only paid about $30NZD for those nine books, and then plus about $30 shipping … $60 divided by nine is $6.60 which is incredibly good price for a book! And with that justification over, here’s what I ordered:

The Name of the Star | The Madness Underneath, by Maureen Johnson

These two books are the first two in the Shades of London series (there’s a third one, too), and I actually read The Name of the Star a few years ago and really enjoyed it. When I spotted it on Book Outlet for a few dollars I knew it was time to pick it up again. Really looking forward to re-reading this and then diving into The Madness Underneath. 

An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard

I’ve seen this book on Goodreads quite a bit, and read a few reviews and it definitely sounds like my kind of book. Ya, fantasy, with magic in New York. Yes please.

Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver

What seems like a lifetime ago now I read Oliver’s Delirium series and also Replica a few years ago, so when I saw that she had another book out (last year) I knew I wanted to add it to my TBR. Thankfully it was super cheap on Book Outlet!

Wolf Light, by Yaba Badoe

The only book in this pile that I didn’t buy! This one was given to me by HarperCollins NZ in exchange for a review, and while it wasn’t my jam in the end, I know a few people who will enjoy it. Also, look at that cover!

Something Strange and Deadly, by Susan Dennard

When I read the synopsis of this book I thought it sounded super familiar. It took a little Goodreads searching to discover why: it’s been on my TBR list for a while now, but with a different cover. This is a YA steampunk paranormal with zombies book. I’m intrigued.

#Prettyboy Must Die by Kimberly Reid | Love Songs and Other Lies, by Jessica Pennington

These two basically just sounded like fun, light hearted, don’t-think-about-it books; the first is about a CIA prodigy and sounds slightly ridiculous but sometimes you just need them in a book, and the latter sounds like a summer-fling love story type novel. We’ll see how we go with these two. If they’re super bad, they were only $3 so no harm done.

Blood and Sand by C. V. Wyk

I’ve heard and seen good things about this book! From the description we’re talking Rome, gladiators, kick-butt female warriors. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

With a 4.31 average star rating on Goodreads you know you’re in for a treat. This fantasy young adult novel sounds awesome and I can’t wait to read it!
