Disney Plus was released in New Zealand yesterday and I’ve already signed up.
Hilarious that they think I need a 7-day trial before signing up for real. As soon as I could I signed up. Unlike the States, we weren’t able to pre-subscribe before the release date, which meant most of New Zealand was signing up on the 19th of November.
Disney Plus has been news for a while now, and we’ve been eagerly waiting it’s arrival. Not only are they streaming Disney shows and movies from the past, they’re releasing new Disney shows and movies, as well as streaming Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Fox films and shows, as Disney now owns the lot. I am here.for.that.
Now that it’s finally arrived in NZ, I thought I”d share with you guys everything (well, the main bulk of everything) I’m excited for. You can find a complete list of what’s on Disney+ on Polygon.
TV Shows on Disney Plus
The Mandelorian – Star Wars
While I’m definitely an original Star Wars fan over Episodes 1 – 3 (anyone who says 4 – 6 aren’t as good as 1 – 3 are wrong on so many levels and don’t even get me started), I did quite enjoy some of the newer ones. Not all of them, but a few have been decent. I’m looking forward to seeing the The Rise of Skywalker, despite my meh feelings towards the ‘new’ ones in general. A Star Wars TV show, however, I can get behind. Definitely excited to start The Mandelorian!
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
Okay so … maybe I’m not necessarily looking forward to this, per se, but I am intrigued by it. Anyone who knows me knows I love a bit of High School Musical, so High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is one I want to check out. Whether I’ll stick with it is a whole other matter but I’m definitely going to watch the first episode. If you’re not aware, this long-titled TV show is, like the movie, about a group of high-schooler putting on a musical, except the musical they’re putting on is … High School Musical. This tells me two things: firstly that Disney is running out of ideas, and secondly High School Musical is now old enough to be a musical that people put on … which makes me feel super old.
Disney Channel shows
We never had Sky growing up, but my friends did. I would spend the weekends and summers round at their house, swimming in the pool, playing board games and watching Disney Channel. It’s where we saw High School Musical, Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place and Phil of the Future. While I might not binge watch shows like Suite Life of Zack and Cody or Phineas and Ferb like I once did … I might watch the odd episode or so.
National Geographic Documentaries
While I realise documentaries aren’t really ‘shows’, they’re not really movies either? So I’ve put them here. Like I mentioned, we’ve never had Sky in our home, so while I’ve seen a good deal of David Attenborough docos (and the odd History Channel show), I’ve never seen a lot of Nat Geo ones, but I can’t wait to watch some of them, in particular The Lost Tomb of Alexander the Great (2019).
Movies on Disney Plus
Lady and the Tramp (2019)
The next in the Live-Action Disney movie lineup is coming to Disney Plus, rather than the big screen. Lady and the Tramp was never a favourite Disney movie of mine, however, I have seen it multiple times. I am very much looking forward to seeing this one. I just really wanna see how the spaghetti scene plays out with two real dogs…
Noelle (2019)
Anna Kendrick in a Christmas movie you say? I’m ready for it. Noelle is the story of Santa’s daughter as she takes over the family business. I love me a good (or bad, I’m not fussy) Christmas movie, and this is coming to our (small) screens with Disney Plus. Super looking forward to it!
The old classics everyone knows about
I’m talking The Lion King (1994), Aladdin (1997), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Snow White (1937), Cinderella (1950), Mulan (1998), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1997); all the movies that we grew up with as kids on VHS and spent too long rewinding back to the beginning before watching because we couldn’t be bothered doing it when we finished it a week prior.
The old classics not everyone knows about
So there are some Disney movies from days gone by that not everyone seen. I’m talking movies such as The Sword in the Stone (1963), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), and The Rescuers (1977). Yes perhaps most Disney lovers would have seen these, but your average Joe Blogs on the street, maybe not. These are all fantastic movies, but I suspect they don’t get all the credit they deserve due to the fact none of them have Disney Princesses in them. Unfair call? Perhaps. Am I right? Again, perhaps. You can make up your mind on that one.
The Since-2000 movies
Disney’s first movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and it was released in December 1937. Since then there have been hundreds of movies and shows released by Disney, and every new generation is showered with new content. Since 2000 there have been some epic movies, some of which were super well known (Tangled, Frozen, Moana etc), and some which were at the beginning of the millennia and perhaps aren’t as wide spread in their viewing. Movies such as The Emperor’s New Groove (2000), Meet the Robinsons (2007) and Brother Bear (2003), were all excellent, just as much so as the more popular ones (again…with Disney Princesses in them…?).
Disney Live Action
Long before Disney started running out of ideas and just remaking old classic animated movies in live-action versions, they had original live-action films. I haven’t seen too many, but the likes of Swiss Family Robinson (1960), Pollyanna (1960), The Parent Trap (1961), and Mary Poppins (1964) are all films that I watched as a kid. Anjali here, reporting for reminiscing duty. Of course the occasional re-watch of the modern re-makes will likely happen, such as The Lion King, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast (all decent, but will never top the originals).
Pixar movies
Oh hello Pixar! Welcome to online streaming! Disney has owned Pixar since 2006, and because of this we’re now have access to Pixar movies dating back to 1995 when Pixar released its first movie: Toy Story. Other Pixar movies that I have loved over the past 13 years include: All of them. Somehow all the Pixar movies are brilliant and I can’t wait to watch some of them again.
Fox Movies
Oh guess what? Disney owns Fox, too. Surprise surprise. But that does mean we get a lot of Fox movies, too; the older ones like Miracle on 34th Street (1947) and The Sound of Music (1965), all the way up to more modern films like Avatar (2009). Oh and the entire The Simpsons catalogue.
Star Wars and Marvel
Get.in.my.life. Even if you’ve only been following the blog for a short space of it, you’ll probably know that I love both these things very much. Basically I’m excited to have easy access to both Star Wars and Marvel and I feel multiple marathons are in my near future. They’re also releasing Marvel shows, like Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2020), Loki (2021), Hawkeye (2021), and WandaVision (2021), but as you can see, not for a while yet.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Is The Curse of the Black Pearl one of the greatest movies ever? Is the Pope Catholic?
What are you looking forward to watching or re-watching with Disney Plus?
